30/40 krag case
I am interested in a 6.5x30/40 krag. Does anyone have info on this?

What type of rifle are you considering putting it in? There can be quite a difference if it is chambered in a strong action such as a P-14 or a Ruger # 1 or 3 it would be very sinilar to a 6.5x55 or 6.5x57 or 257 Roberts in a strong bolt action. If chambered in a weaker action such as a Krag or SMLE pressures must be kept lower and velocities will be a couple hundred feet /sec slower.PO Ackley created an improved version that claims some impressive velocity in a strong action. Ellwood Epps in Canada did similar work using the 303 British case. Does that help?

Well,
Currently have a 30/40 in a #3 which shoots very well. Don't wish to change. What I've been looking at is a 5 1/2# Contender exposed hammer with a 21 inch barrel, 30/40. Also shoot a260 rem in a 1885 low wall.

The 30/40 is loaded to 40,000 cup. The 260 is loaded to 55,000 cup. So my thought is that if
30/40 case is necked down to 6.5 could it be safely be used in the newer g2 Contender? I understand that it could be chambered in an encore, however, that is a heavier gun.

Knew about Epps and there is a 25 Krag but haven't read anything lately. My brother had a Mark III Enfield in 303B. Very much like that cartridge also. Your comment are helpful.

Playing a lot at the reload bench, one would think that you can neck one down to what you want.. 6.5 Krag...

Info on it wouldn't be much different than the 25 Krag... remember tho there was a 25 long Krag and 25 Short Krag...

see what kind of powder capacity it has, and then compare the findings to other cartridges within that bore that might be close...

I for example found out that a Rem 6.5 x 55 case when compared to a Rem 260 case, if one filled both to the brim with H 380... the 260 only holds exactly ONE grain less of H 380, than the 6.5 x 55....

and for my 6.5 x 57, I use necked up 257 Roberts brass with a Win Head Stamp... and that also held EXACTLY the same volume of H 380 to the brim that the 6.5 x 55 Rem Brass held...

concluding that much of the reload data for each is pretty interchangable, but a wise handloader will still work up slowly tho...

I've debated on rebarreling a Magnum action rifle for something along the lines of your thoughts using 30/40 Krag brass...eyeing the 25 Krag, or the 22/303...or even a Krag cased 219 Zipper...
