308 volume with 748
Could some one please fill a 308 case with Win 748 and tell me what it weighs? I got 56gr, just want to make sure my scale is OK. I'm using Lapua cases.
Thanks FS

it's going to change on a case by case basis

It will differ not only on a case-by-case basis, but on a brand-by-brand basis.

Unless you are trying to calculate loading density, it shouldn't matter how much 748 that case will hold.

My manuals suggest that 5i.5 gr is a compressed load, so I was thinking that this much powder should be well into the neck, but it is not.

If you want to check your scale, get a set of scale check weights.

Weigh a good quality bullet to check your scales, you're on to a hiding to nothing with the case full of powder idea...

Fasteel,

505 RCBS scale, measured against check weight & zeroed.
W748 powder trickled through funnel, and measured to top of rim.

Lapua brass, trim length 2.005", 54.7 gr.

Nosler brass, trim length 2.005, 54.5 gr.

Lake City Brass, trim length, 2.002, 53.1 gr.

Winchester, trim length, 2.008, 55.3 gr.

RP, Trim length 2.010, 55.4 gr.

Of course, this should be taken with a "grain" of salt!

GW, now that is interesting. Great info. The thing that immediately caught my eye was Lapua and Nosler virtually the same, as was RP and Winchester, but at slightly different weights. I expected the lower number from LC.

Thanks for doing this.

Larry,
I think I will trim the Winchester and RP brass to 2.005 and see what I get.

very good of you to do this for me. I guess I could have used bullets to check the weights, but I was thinking the volume of powder might be different. FS

Hard to be exact with this measurement, but mine gives 49.5-50.0 grains of 748 to the base of the neck.
