snomerTikka 7mm-08...chamber to 7x57??
Since the Tikka 7mm-08 is chambered on a long action, is it feasible (and cost effective) to have said rifle rechambered to 7x57? The magazine spacer could be shaved down to accommodate the extra brass length.
Just curious...and hopeful

ramrod340Not really the 7-08 shoulder is larger than the 7x57 case. You would need to set the barrel back. I think we ran this issue a while back. The 7x57AI "might" clean it up.
If you want more performance from your 7mm-08 then just have it reamed to 284 winchester.
I did this with my M595 Tikka and it works superbly. It took me about 10 minutes to modify the magazine so that the cartridges feed perfectly. My mag has an internal length of just over 3 inches. This allows me to seat the long heavy bullets out a fair distance and I gain at least 200 fps over the 7mm-08.
The 284win is one underrated cartridge and I have found that I can exceed most reloading manuals by up to 5 grains of powder.

seafire/B17GI don't own a 7/08, but have loaded some for a friend's daughter's. I have the dies...
But I do own a couple of the 7mm Mausers..
Neither the Mauser or the 7/08 do anything that you can't duplicate with the other...that is why I don't have a 7/08....
But if I had a 7/08, I wouldn't bore it out to make a 7mm Mauser, nor would I take a 7mm Mauser and make it into a 7/08....
Different case sizes, but same results! Waste of time and effort either way...

snomerThanks for the feedback. I'll just keep the rifle as a 7mm-08.

merganser1Since the Tikka is on a long action, is the magazine and throat longer and able to accept bullets seated out a little farther than a short action. IMO that would be a good thing.
I have got a Tikka T-3 Lite coming. Seems like from what I have read and just looking at case size, the 7/08 operates at quite a bit higher pressures than the 7x57 to achieve the same velocity. If I could seat bullets out like in a long throated 7x57 that would lower pressures, right? I am looking for ways to reduce recoil in that lightweight gun. Merg

Take a look at the magazine spacer. No ways can you shave anything off it.

Very good question.
The 7-08 is the ballistic twin of the 7x57.
