I'm going to start loading for a freinds .300 RUM in a few days. What can a guy TRULY expect with 180's? Not looking to get MAX velocity, he's looking for a safe load thats accurate.

What powder?? I've got some RL25 and IMR7828 at the ready.

Both are great powders for that cartridge. Try both to see what his gun likes. I like CCI and Winchester primers myself, but the Federals should work fine. Check out the link below. It shows what many different guys are using for this gun. Be cautious though and don't take their numbers for granted.

Frank, I've had some limited experience with my .300 ultra. I'ts a M700 BDL in SS. Mine shows a preference for RL22, 215 primers, with 180g bullets. Seems that it shoots well just under max loads, in the area of 3250FPS. I've shot Balistic tips, Sierra Gamekings (boat tail), Partition & Partition Goilds thru it with most loads sneaking under 1 MOA. Right now I'm blueprinting the action, gonna put a Lilja barrel on it with a tight neck/ short throat.

Here's my personal fave...180gr. Sierra MK or Pro Hunter...RL25 93.2gr. Fed.215M primer..and BOOM!! Bullseye..
I have been working w/ Retumbo also...have not found a good load yet....sakofan..

Right now mine does better with H-1000 and IMR-7828 with 180'S.Thats a 26in Shilen select.H-4831 isnt bad either.I cant make retumbo shoot in mine or 870 for that matter.For my rifle the max loads are too much.[according to imfo I have]I have to load down a bit but the chronographed velocities are there just with less powder.The mk's shoot well but the 180-flatbase[sierra]does a great job also.96gr of H-1000 runs it at 3240ave and is my personal best 180gr load.Although 89gr of H-4831 and 92gr of 7828 are not far behind.For hunting big game the 180 pro-hunter loved 93gr of 7828 and ave. around 3290 amd 1/2 in groups with no signs of high pressure.

My own rifle likes 96 gr of reloader 25 behind a 180gr bullet and delivers 3375fps.Even a reduced load will easily produce around 3300fps.

89.0gr. IMR 7828
Fed. 215M primers
Hornady SST 180gr.
This load was kinda a fluke. I bought the SST's for anougher rifle, and just for kicks loaded some rounds for my UM.
This combo has produced 1/2in groups at 100yds, easily.
My UM also does not like near max loads, as some people I know have used up to 100gr. of RL25.
My bolt got sticky at 94gr....go figure....sakofan...

sakofan-If your bolt gets sticky you are at the maximum load.Each rifle has it's own maximum load that can vary a great deal from the loading manuals.

Mine likes 95 grains of Reloader 25 with CCI 250 primers. I do not have signes of excessive pressure and have loaded it hotter but 95 grains has worked best for me. My velocity was around 3350 fps.

I have some 7828 on the shelf but I have never tried it. I think Nosler recommends 89 grains with 180 grain bullets as a most accurate load.

You go through powder cans fast though.

I was just stating that some others w/ the same rifle, have been able to load more powder.
My 300RUM, never has liked near max. loads.

Not to change the subject, but have you guys taken a look at that new 200gr. Accubond from Nosler? It's got a B.C. of .588. That bullet could very well be tailor-made for the RUM case.
