Developing a 'favorite' medium bore.
I love rifles like the rest of us and pour over ballistic tables & gun rags anguishing over 7x57 vs 280 vs 30-06 vs 7mm rem mag........ to ad nauseum. Like all here I've engaged in the same camp fire discussion of comparing apples to apples to apples.......

But this is the best way to develop a preference, my oldest with his first deer and his Paw Paw's m700 270win (also I used same gun for my first deer when I had a bit less grey):

So as far as he is concerned this gun & caliber is the best ever made. I think he's on the right track.

As far as I'm concerned, your son is absolutely right in feeling that it's the best ever made. For him it will likely be the one he remembers most fondly and rightfully so! Congrats to you and your boy!

Hey Pete, Congratulations to both you and your son. Nice Deer.

I agree with your son. My first rifle kill was also with a 270, so it is and probably always will be my favorite.

Great photo by the way!

Pete,

You got it!!! That is far and away the right route to travel. Your son is King For A Day, or maybe a lifetime.
You should frame that pix as it is outstanding!!!

Kudos to your son... Every Dad want's a son like yours.

What a scew up! You have not invested the prerequisite thousands of dollars on "test" rifles and load development.Big Grin

Both of your smiles pretty well sums it up. I too, shot my first deer with a .270, but I have to admit I slid into a 7mm-08, after playing with several calibers and rifles of course!

Congrats,

Bob

Yup, I also took my first deer at 12 with the .270 Win.

If you have given him your .270, wonderful. If you are going to buy him a gun go with the .280 Rem. He will be able to shoot it just as well and load 160 gr bullets for elk or moose.

Great picture and story, works great on elk too. I load 160gr partitions for that. I'm a died in the wool .270 fan, always will be. I think it started when I was to young to hunt but tagging along with my uncle. We saw a Bear on the opposing side of a draw and to me it looked a mile away. He called a shot "right behind the ear" and sure enough that's where the bullet landed out of his pre-war model 70 in .270. Now that I'm an adult I imagine the distance was probably closer than I thought and the shot perhaps involved a bit of luck but I was sold. Smiler
