Finally Got this Rifle to Shoot!

DC RoxbyFinally Got this Rifle to Shoot!
I've been struggling with this Rem 700 in .300 RUM since I bought it new. I replaced the plastic stock with a new MacMillan and had it glass bedded. This brought groups from 3" to around 2". Shot all kinds of ammo and finally had Superior Ammo send me a sample pack with 4 different bullet types. The 200 grn TSX shoot like a laser out of this thing!
Got a 3/4" 3 shot group today in spite of strong gusty winds. I'm elated.

Fish30114Good on ya! It's amazing how picky some rigs can be. I would think hard about a serious barrel break in routine if you haven't been through one alread. I've seen a lot of 300 rums like that, and they all shot way better than that.
On the other hand, if you like the TSX's, just roll with it, they look like they are awesome for you!

DC RoxbyI've wondered at times if this thing was just taking forever to break in. I probably have about 250 rounds through it, and it has seemed to shoot a little better each time out. Wierd thing is that I shot about 15 TSX rounds today, letting the barrel cool between shots. Each group got tighter in spite of the wind increasing.... First group 1.25" and last .75".
I don't understand it, but I will take it.
I was gonna rebarrel after this last attempt.

Fish30114I think that's a great approach, not sure why, but take it and rock. 1.25" cold bore is good enough unless your shooting PD's or such, which isn't usually the prupose of a 300 RUM.
I've had rifles that improved during a range session, and I figure it's either me getting more comfortable squeezing off the shot, or it's the barrel warming up enough to get in a position it likes better, even if it's just a little bit. Some times it don't take much!

FjoldI've got a 7 Mag that will only shoot the 140 grain TSX. It took me 2 years to find that load. Sometimes it happens.

Paul from nzis that barrel floated? if not it could make a bit of difference. you need to be able to fit a peice of paper thats folded over between the barrel and stock for the entire length.. atleast that smaller gap.

DC RoxbyThe barrel is floated. Had a very good gunsmith bed the action and float the barrel. The original plastic stock was warped and pressing against the side of the barrel.

Thomas JonesI have been in a similar situation before. It was a Ruger .257 roberts. It shot about 3 inches out of the box.
Timney trigger ,free floating, glass bedding got it down to about 2 inches.
A 100 grain tsx barnes with 46 grains of H-414 was about the 20,th load I tried.
.75. An a buch more good groups too.
I was quite happy and the load is great for deer.
My only dissapoitment was it was going to cost me about .50 each time I pulled the trigger on the thing with that load.
Eventaully the thing started shooting just about anything I fed her quite well.
Your 200 grain tsx will be about the ultimate 30,cal big game rifle anyway.
But I bet eventally it will work with some other loads too...tj3006

ldkierGreat horizontal. The vertical abboration is most likely physical. With three shots the vertical should be not so prenounced. Could be primer seating. or primer/powder relationship.
great group.
I've been doping with the WSSM's and WSM's for seversl years. I'm finding a BIG difference in velocity and target objective for same powder loads vs. primer selection.
In other words; you got to get the primer type and powder matched.
Simple enough? Now take my case.
I had what I thought was the "perfect" load.
I suffered hours and money trying to get one of them "new-fangled" WSSM's to shoot at least MOA.
I just happend to find a load (H-4350) and Federal 215 primers that consistantly rewarded me with .30 to .50 groups. FANTASTIC.....
I thought....UNTIL I COULD NO LONGER FIND Federal 215's.
Oh, well I thought. I got a boatload of CCI 200's, Remington 91/5 M's and WLRM's this should work.
Every primer with the exact load printed vertically. Some very diappointedtly.
I tried every primer....Dissapointment
Getting a Winchester M70 FWHT 25WSSM to shoot is NOT an easy task..at least for me.
Taking a few shots and getting .38 group with the original H-4350 load and Federal 215 primers "sealed the deal"
Try different primers.

stillbeemanPut the pressure point back in there and your vertical stringing might go away. Free floating ain't the cure all some folks think it is. Just put a couple or three biz cards between the barrel and stock about 2" from the front and give it a try. Start out with 2 and then add another after a couple of trials.

CopidosomaI'm going through a similar process with a .308 win of all things. Good to see there is still hope.

jetdrvrMe, too, w/ a Dakota 7mm Rem. All it will shoot is Federal premium 160 TSX's. Haven't been able to come up with a load myself that will equal that. Very frustrating, considering what I paid for the rifle. It's isn't free floated, either. Very persnikity rifle. Expected better from Dakota.

DC Roxbystillbeeman,
I am going to play around with the pressure point this weekend to see if I can get rid of some of the vertical stringing.

PeglegIf you aren't near max in your rifle you might try a little more powder. Alot of benchresters think vertical can be controled with a little more powder in the case.
