Question about the CZ550 American

I finally managed to get a look at a CZ550 American in 9.3x62mm in the flesh so to speak, and was reasonably impressed. One thing that worried me though was that the forend seemed "loose"..Just a small amount of side ways pressure made it move against the barrel. It was almost as if it were free floated, but only just...We checked the action screws and the were tight.

So does anybody know if this thing should be free floated or have a pressure pad at the tip? Does anybody else have a CZ550 American were the fore end appears to be "loose" like this??

I have not shot one, but it just does not fill me will confidence as far as accuracy potential goes.

I have one and it is solid. I also have a third set screw up front on the front recoil lug.

Since I have a 416 Rigby, you may not have one nor need one on your 9.3.

Well thats an easy fix if it does....You never know until you shoot a new gun just what its going to do, no exceptions to that rule....

Some guns shoot free floated, some need three point bedding with pressure on the forend and some need to be tight from tang to forend...

I would rather have a free floated gun that shot an 1.5 than a tight or 3 point bedded gun that shot a half inch..simply because the free floated gun is less likely to cause problems in the field IMO...

Mr Atkinson has hit the proverbial nail on the head! The target that came with my CZ550 American in 6.5 Swede went just over 1.25" for 3 shots. Pressure point about an inch back from the fore-end tip. I glassed the action and about 1.5" of the barrel and then free-floated the rest of the stock. Factory S&B ammo now shoots about 1" 3-shot groups and handloads less than an inch. I am satisfied and that is what counts. One of the best commercial rifles on the market, IMHO.

My cz lux 9.3 has the same bit of movement so I removed the stock and sanded a tad where the pressure was and then sealed the wood again, I have not shot it since I did this, but I think it will be better.

Well Folks,

The 9.3x62 is now sitting in my gun cabinet!

After wondering what to do, I decided to take the chance and buy it. I stripped her out the stock when I got home and observed that there was a "pad" after a fashion at the tip. It was actually a ridge about 3/4" running length ways in the barrel channel, and the movement I could feel was when I pulled the barrel to either side of it... Its really strange. I think it was deliberate as it was actually marked with a couple of pencil marks...

Anyway, I have free floated the barrel and we will ses how it shoots; I can always repalce the pressure pad with something a pit more positive,

Pete that 9.3 will not dissapoint you, I had that same bit of movement in mine, I have not shot it since I removed it.
