8x60 magnum bombe

I though you might like to see a different rifle. It is an 8x60 Magnum built on a Mauser action with some very different features. Full Octagon Barrel, Express sights to 500 yards and a ladder sight to 1200 yards.Buffalo Horn forend cap and grip cap, Carries: Fritz Weiss of Suhl Germany and the name R. Mu(e)ller on the barrel.
According to the Cartridges of the World the Magnum generates velocities at 300H&H levels.
Moderate engraving and carries like any fine rifle should.

Thanks for sharing! Nice rifle, I really like the long barrels of that time. Remember, the "bombe"loading was equaled to the .300H&H loadings of that time, not what we can load it to today.

Still a good round, capabel of everything exept the biggest stuff.

Here is a picture of my rifle marked as chambered for the 8X60 Magnum. Mannlicher-Schoenaure, rear sight is marked for 100 and 300 yards/meters. Shoots Hornady 170 grain round nose interlocs to point of aim at 100 yards with the iron sights.

Outstanding! I really envy you the claw mounts.
Where did you find dies? I have not found any yet. I love the butterknife bolt handles. I have them on a couple of my early Bruno and mannlicher rifles.
Are your sights marked in meters? and yards? mine is only marked in yards.

I plan to have the major metal work completed on the 8x60s I'm tinkering with by year's end. RWS makes brass. I think every Mauser guy needs one!

I bought my dies and brass from http://www.huntingtons.com/

They had both in stock at the time I ordered.

My sights are just marked 100 and 300. No indication if it is meters or yards. I have not researched it enough to know which is would be. Claw mounts are nice . I have them on a Germanic Mauser 98 in 7X57. Unfortunately I do not have the matching rings for the set on this M-S. I am saving up to have a set custom fit. That should run me between $550 and $800. Fortunately my 7X57 came with a set of rings fit to the mounts.

There is little practical diffence between meters and yards, out to about 500 or so. It is more important to use the same weight bullet for which the sights are regulated. I have found most 8x60s sights to be spot on with 220 grain bullets.

I envy you all your bolt action 8X60's! Particularly the Mannlicher-Schoenauer.

I have one in an old J.P. Sauer SXS double. Of course, it is 8X60RS, so cases have to be made for it. I use RWS 7X65R brass, and of course cannot load it to the "Magnum Bombe" level. I use 200-grain Speer and Nosler Partition bullets in it. Back when H205 powder was available, I could get 2620 FPS from it with relatively low pressures. But now I use RE 22, and have to limit velocity to no more than 2400 or so.

Here's how it shoots at 100 yards. Despite being old, it is still regulated pretty well. The original load used 198-grain bullets, according to the stampings under the barrels..... It has a Leupold 1.5X-5X in claw mounts. When I got it, the bases were on it but the original scope and rings were long-gone. I sent it to Paul Jaeger in PA for rings. I think they sent it to Germany, because it took 18 months to get it back. But it was worth the wait! It weighs around 7.5 pounds with scope mounted.

El Daguello, Your double sounds like afine rifle and clearly it shoots very well. Currently I am loading 170 grain round nose bullets. I do not have my load book with me to look up the velocity but it is no where near "Bombe Levels".

All I need now are better eyes and something willing to stand still long enough to test the sights out.
That double is still pretty tight. Doen't RWS still make ammo? I think I read where it was still available.
I got my dies ordered and now just need to wait a bit before trying it out. I am also looking for some original ammo for the Bombe.

Lovely photos of your M1924 8x60mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer!! That's a rifle for the rest of us to crave. I'm still playing with one of the 8x60 (0.318) Sakos, which shoots well, but is so limited by the extreme shortage of 0.318 bullets. Congratulations on owning a fine rifle.

Thanks. It is a very nice old gun. My next loading experiment will substitute 200-grain Nosler Accubonds for the Partition bullets. My present load is 58 grains of RE 22 with the 200-grain bullets. This gives me 2420 FPS @ 10' from the muzzle, and the rifle is easy to open after two shots...... The H205 load was 55.7 grains, V=2620 FPS.

I have NOT been able to locate any of the RIMMED 8X60 cases.... I believe that only the rimless version is still being made.

Can't you form cases from 9.3x74R brass? I know the headstamp isn't right but the brass should work.

You might try the Hawk lineup. The soft bullets they offer should not affect a double either.
My rifle slugged at .323 so I have quite a few lead bullets to play with as well for target and lesser loads and of course I can make brass from the '06.

Yes, you can, but I've been using 7X65R brass instead, and it works very well....... There's plenty of neck that has to be trimmed even with a 65mm case, and you'd have to chop a lot more off of a 74mm case.....
