220grs RN in .30 mags
Anybody uses the heavy RN in Mags like .308 Norma or .300Wby?

240gr Woodleigh (0.401 bc) in 300 Win Mag. About 2700 fps muzzle speed groups not too bad at 100 yards sub 2 inch from 1:11 twist 24.6" barrel Sako Grey Wolf.

A real long time ago, the early 1970s, the 220 grain Hornady and in 308 Norma Magnum. Accuracy was excellent and probably the most accurate load in the rifle.

Can't remember the load but it would have been the old surplus 4831.

240gr Woodleigh at 2700 fps. Or flat shooting 130gr TTSX at 3800 fps. 300 Win Mag versatility. tu2

Are there any differences between Hornady RN and Sierra RN in 220grs?

I believe they are both soft bullets designed for the 30-06 (velocities around 2400 fps) The Rem 220g CoreLokt is probably the class of that group.

I used a 200 grain Nosler Partition at 2900 fps to take my 91\2 ft Brown at Cold Bay Alaska with my .300 Winny. It was a bang flop shot at 90 yards head on with the Bear standing up facing me. I couldn't have asked for better results. Used 180 grain Partitions at 3100 fps for Caribou on that trip. Good Shooting.

Great load for Black Bear over bait.

The Hornady is more parallel sided and the Sierra has a longer slope from the RN to .308. Both good bullets at 2500 FPS at the muzzle on game. Both good on game at approx. 1800 fps impact speeds out there a ways too in my experience.

My Standard load in my .308 Norma is the 200grs Nosler Part., but I got a couple of 220grs Sierra RN.
I tried it in my .300Wby and it groups very well!

I shot the 220gr Sierra out of my 300Win. I didn't have a lot of them so I didn't really get the load dialed in like I wanted them. I went to the store looking for more and found the 200gr Game King and never looked back. Killed two Elk with the 200gr loaded at approx. 2900 out of my 26" Rem Sendero. One was a drop where it was hit and the other went a short distance.

I use the 220 gr woodleigh FMJ as a small animal load in a .300 RUM.

Shot a colobus with it this spring in Ethiopia .

They work. I’d think it would brain a buff or elephant if it was what I had in my hands when things go pear shaped.

No need for them, but the 220 NPs group well in our 'Bees. Maybe the long bearing surface. No trouble getting 2700-2750 fps out of 24".

Years ago I had a few of the 220 grain Partition. Not enought to bother shooting. I remember they were very soft at the front. I could slice straight through with a pair of side cutters like the bullet was just a piece of pure lead. So they should have worked well on small animals.

My guess is that any 220 grain will be designed with the 30/06 in mind as I don't think many 300 Magnum owners would be interested in them.

The 200 grain Partition seems to get a fair bit of 300 Wby use and maybe because it will easily exceed 3000 f/s whereas the 300 Winchester is a 2900 f/s plus deal.

130gr TTSX at 3800 fps muzzle speed for hunting with my 300 Win Mag. Shoots real flat with decent downrange energies.

220gr Remington Core Lokt ammo at 2400 fps muzzle speed for hunting with my 30-06's. Load 220gr Woodleigh in my 1:12 twist barrel 308 CZ550 at 2400 fps with good accuracy.

I would opt for the 220 gr. Nosler partition in the big 30s for sure, at 2700 FPS its a hammer on big stuff and works fine on elk and Moose and Im sure on bear if one can shoot...

However my pet load in my 30-06s is the 200 gr. NOsler partition or Accubond at a bit over 2900 FPS with Rl-19, H414 or Rl-22, take your pick, and Yes Im over book and have been for many years..In both the 30 magnums and 30-06 Ive found I can get the same velocity as I got with the 180 gr bullets, so why not?
