Custom 9.3x62 ideas
I had a little ship come in and want to use an 1982 lightened Rem 700 LA to build a 9.3x62.

Intended quary will be elk, Grizzly and moose.

What barrel (brand, twist, length, contour) would you use?

What stock? Probably something within the McMillian lineup.

I'll be mounting either a VXII 2-7 w/ LR reticle or my NF 2.5-10x32 with NP-R2 reticle.

I like light weight. My previous CZ550's recoil pushing the 286 PT @ 2500 didn't bother me a bit from the bench when working up loads.

I'll have it all Cerakoted and built by Chris Matthews of Longshot Rifles.

FWIW, I have 3 9.3x62s, one of which is a semi custom. Mine is a Win M70 Classic stainless with 24" Shilen barrel and open sights. It wears a Winchester Winlite (McMillan) stock that has a blind magazine. On top is a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5.

I am contemplating Duracoating it in matte black.

Alan,

Sounds like a plan to me.

Mine's a sorta semi-custom since like your consideration - I took a L/H Zastava .30/06 Sprg. to my German gunmsmith and told him to turn it into a 20" 9.3x62 for Drive Hunting and inside confined spaces of High Seats.

I never specified a barrel twist for the tube but did qualify I wanted something a tad more substantial than a fly-weight #1 contour. He installed a medium Lothar Walter barrel - shoots excellently, never looked back.

I took a vanilla-flavored Bell & Carlson R/H Mauser stock and with a touch of Accra-Glass turned it backwards to accomodate a L/H Mauser.

Mine's got EAW Pivot Mounts with a Millet Red Dot for stuff running past you and an 8x56 Zeiss for the High Seat night-time stuff.

Voilá - 9.3x62 rifle. Great cartridge; dosn't thump your should anywhere in proportion to the down-range results; which IMO is sorta "mystical" - stuff just keels over & dies, most DRT.

Cheers,
