7mm Rem. Mag. Factory Ammo

My buddy just bought a 7mm Rem Mag. he doesn't reload, so needs some advise on factory ammo.

I haven't bought factory offerings for this cartridge in many years, thus not a lot of help.

Although deer will be the main focus he would like bullets suited for bear and elk.

What is the good stuff?

to make things simple, i'd suggest he find a factory load (prolly from federal) with 160gr partitions (or anything with partitions). see which factory load shoots the most accurate, then buy several boxes of the same lot number. he should be set for many years to come particularly if he is only a hunter and doesn't do a lot of "range" shooting.

That is basically what I told him, look for factories that used a Nosler part. or Barnes tsx, or a Swift AF, but I didn't know much about the Accubounds so did not mention them. I just so rarely buy any factory loaded stuff, I dont know what is out there.

With the 7Mag, I have always reloaded and my hunting buddy did not. He used Federal Premium with 160gr. Partitions and his accuracy was almost as good as mine after fine tuning my loads.

So, if there ever comes a time I need ammo and don't have my reloads, I will use the Federal Premiums with Nosler Bullets.

If deer are the main thing on the menu It really isn't a big issue. I know it's in vogue to shoot the most expensive bullets all the time but I think it's a waste of money most of the time. Winchester Power Points work fine, Hornady, or Rem Core-lok have killed a lot of animals. Black bear are nothing like the big bears. If you really feel the need the Federal 160gr Nosler Partitions are probably one of the best choices, followed by one loaded with x's,accubonds, interbonds, possibly Swift A's or Grand Slams if they'll shoot. This bottom one is a 150gr Win PP. These are pretty typical out of my Rem mag. Nate

Yep! Winchester Power Points.Pick grain size to suit your game.Deer generally drop fairly easily.

Federal Prem. 160 NP for the application.

The best I ever tried was Fed Prem 150NBT shot darn near as good as my handloaded 150 NBT but slower. Hornady Custom 154gr SST shoot very well in a friends savage. Though neither are really bear medicine IMHO.

Many years ago, I found that 175 PowerPoints were a great performer.

HBH For my 7mm I prefer the Fed Trophy Bonded Bear Claw in 175gr. I have taken many elk,moose and deer with this bullet up here in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Bullet weight retention is very well on recovered bullets, but normally there is an entry hole and an exit.

Another vote for Double Tap ammo. I don't have a 7mm, but I have a .338 win mag and the loads I've used from them are really accurate in my rifle and their ammo is loaded with premium bullets and it's very reasonably priced. Superior is also very good.

+1 for Federal Premium w/160gr Partitions

. Although I handload 175gr Partitions and Interlocks, for an all round "go-to" cartridge off-the-shelf, that Federal Premium offering is hard to beat.

I just shot 40 of the Federal inexpensive rounds from Wal Mart at paper plates at 200 yards. 3 inch groups and very predictable. Not bad for less than 14.00 a box. I shot em up to load the Sierra 150 BTSP. Might just buy a couple more boxes of the Federal factory load instead.

Remington Core Lokts and Federal Premium Noslers are all fine bullets. That is all I use although I am set up to reload...Can't beat the accuracy of less than .7 inch at 100 for three shots...if I had sprayers then I would reload. Blessings.

Looking at the ballistics of the factory 7mm Rem. mag. ammo, I am not sure there is a "good" factory load, despite the fact that many such loads use good bullets! Most of it has been "wimp-ized" to the extent that it is in the same performance class as the 7X57mm Mauser.........
