DoublegunM70 iron sights?
When I look through the irons on my M70 only the top 1/3 pc the white triangle on the rear blade is visible above the bridge of the receiver. In fact I really have to hunker down on the stock to line up the sight. It just does not seem right.
I guess my question is whether Winchester adjusted the real blade to a low position assuming most guys would slap a scope on and setting the blade low made for more clearance. As a result anyone who wanted to shoot the irons would raise the rear blasé when they sighted in their rifle. Pretty sure I could have phrased the question better but I hope someone understands what I am asking.
Thanks,
JDG

DoublegunNot yet. Haven't had an opportunity to get to the range. I was just thinking about the sights as I was driving yesterday.

AggieI have noticed the same problem on all my M70's .375 & over. You just can't get far enough down on the comb to look through them, therefore I cannot tell if they are on or not.
I have to believe that Winchester just puts them on there to look good. I have restocked several to customs, with a little different stock shape they work fine. Also have a stainless .375 with the Win plastic stock, the sights work just fine with that comb. Just poor design on the Safari's that I own, either that or their QC man is an emaciated, thin-faced little sucker!

BlacktailerIf you put a scope on it you may find that you can't see the irons unless you remove the bases. When I put Talley QR mounts on mine I got the Talley peep and had to get a taller front sight to make it work.

DoublegunPerhaps I was not clear in my original post: I removed the scope, rings and bases. The top of the receiver is as it was when it left the factory in 1953. Either the rear blade is set too low or the front post is a little too short. Seems ridiculous given the quality and nature of the rifle at that time.

BlacktailerP64 M70's have too much drop at the heel for me. That's why I restocked my 375H&H. My front sight is not very much taller than the factory sight and allows me to use the Talley peep. At my age factory open sights are useless anyway. An aperture sight still works tho.

TomPI've put a Williams 5D with a taller front sight on a couple of rifles, so far.
