Hello friends,I am a new member here and just wanted to introduce myself, I have been reading through this forum for awhile and must say there is a wealth of knowledge here. I've got a quick question for you fellas, I'm planning on buying a new Remington 700 but haven't decided on 30/06 or 300WSM and I was wondering how many reloads I can get from 300WSM brass and if it's as accurate a cartridge as the '06. Thank you all in advance for your advise.

vapodogWelcome to the forums....and to your question I doubt seriously that either of those cartridges has an advantage over the other in accuracy or in case life.
Pick the one that turns your crank.

If you can get a 300wsm in mod. 700 BDL Factory new, that's the one to get. You'll have a real collectors item in 5 years.

The 30-06 may be Ho Hum but it's here to stay for a while.

and can do it all.

phurley5CXL ----- Welcome to AR, you are in for a good ride. Go with the .300 and don't look back. You may want to change the safety on the Remington.

Good luck and good shooting.

What MIGHT be a real collector's item in a few years???
The Remington Model 700â„¢ CDLâ„¢ SF Limited
the stainless fluted 30-06 Centennial rifle.
If you are into the wood/stainless combination... really nice rifle and if the one I handled had really nice wood...
Retail about $800
The WSM is good for about 150fps over the 30-06, but you just KNOW 30-06 ammo will continue to be available for another hundred years....
30-06... it just works...

RiodotWelcome to the forum!!
I have nothing against the 300WSM but, since this is the 100th year of the 30-06, I would consider it.
I guess I just love classic cartridges, and you do not get much more classic than the 30-06.

grizz007CXL, you will do good here-welcome. These fine gentleman have time on their hands and have a wealth of info. I would do the .30-06, just seen many animals that drop and ammo is available anywhere you wind up. Just my .02

I have to agree with Allen's assessment on the CDL. I too am in favour of the 30-06, for all the usual reasons.

I too like the Rem. M700 CDL in 30/06!

ACRecurveCXL,
Welcome to AR! Your choice between '06 and WSM will be ultimately, "which one do YOU want?" Within practical hunting ranges there is very little real difference. The WSM will cause more meat damage at a given range than the '06 but will reach a bit further. My personal preference after having used both is for the '06. Those derned WSM rounds are just too fat for my liking. Good luck with your decision and ENJOY whichever you choose!

Good hunting,
Andy

Thomas JonesI can,t knock the 300WSM either its good performing round, but in my opinion the wsm's and several other projects and problems paid a huge roll in killing winchester. All the R&D and advertising money had to be extreemly expensive.
My 1st hunting rifle was a 700BDL in 30,06. And I bet lots of other here would say the same thing. My current rifle colletion of 15 rifles contains 3 30,06s Its ther most versital round out there. with the new recoil pad remington uses , you cant go wrong. I don't know how much shooting you have done but I really don't need a pad on a 30,06. even my old featherweight winchester needs none...tj3006

Thank you for your advice fellas, I was also looking at a Remington model 7 in 300 SAUM. What are your opinions on this rifle?
Thanks, Chris

grizz007CXL, the only Ultra Mag I own an won't own another is the .375 RUM. When I hit a Moose it is quite a bloodshot mess. I did not buy it for that anyways- for big bear pretty much. I am not in favor of Real velocity rounds unless distance shooting is the requirment. Too close up front causes to much bloodshot for meat eaters. When you consider these ultra fast rounds consider the cost of the "premier" rounds to go with the rifle. A bullet must hold up or it does not perform.
Still think the .06 is the best in its class-it does not need to be improved on in any way, for all of North America has to offer in regards to game.

fredj338The wsm may add 50yds to a handloaded 06. Less rounds in the wsm mag. Really depends on what you want. Either will do what you need on deer/elk out to 400yds. Beyond that I would probably want the extra vel. of the wsm.

I was being a little faseeshuhs before as I didn't see the .300WSM Listed as a chambering in that model Rem. 700

and that is why I thought It would make a collector's Item. Even if you got it in a Winnie offering it'll be a collector's item shortly. A RUM or Sum * Eh

Get the 06.

Chris,
It all depends on what you plan to use it for. I shoot a 300 SAUM in a Sendero and love it. In the model 7 you will want a decelerator pad or the equivalent on it. That is a light weight rifle and the 300SAUM can sting you a little.
If you only plan to hunt deer I would not get anything larger than a 30-06. My sweetheart deer rifle is a 7mm08 and no one here will ever convince me there is a better caliber for deer.
My 300SAUM is for larger stuff.
If you wanted a short fat magnum the 300WSM offers a little bit more powder capacity and about 100fps more speed than the SAUM.
Ask yourself what are planning to hunt and go from there.
Dwight
Thanks for all your replies! I'll be using the rifle for deer/elk/moose and targets for the time being but like everyone else I have intentions of going to Alaska someday.
09 March 2006, 20:38
SnellstromAnother thing to consider is the magazine capacity of the short mags is 2? 3? where the '06 is 5. I've never needed that many shots from my 30/06 but you never know Elk are sometimes difficult to put down and some day I may need that many!

The 300SAUM or 300WSM is all you need unless you are going for big bear. Another great choice is the 300 Win Mag and this eliminates some of the feeding problems people sometimes have with short Mags.

Welcome! I bel;ieve the .300 WSM is a very consistent performer in the accuracy department, and the cases are very rugged. Ballistically, it does have a slight edge over the old '06. I'd be tempted to buy one, if I didn't have a .30/'06. But if I had a good '06, I would not retire it in favor of the .300 WSM......
