model7LSS.257 STW?
i have a friend who's brother jst got a #1 barreled in .257 STW. Claims he is gettingh 4300 fps over 82grs of R22 with 100 gr X's. Both are habitual liars. Bullshit or belief?

MonticelloI think I smell something. Do you?
Considering the highest recommnded velocity out of the .257 Wthby is 3800 with 75 grain bullet I think your friend's bro has just crossed the line thereby becoming a pathological liar, but maybe I am wrong.

Mike3753800-3900 should be possible with a 26 inch barrel and 100 grain bullets.
He might also be using a Chrony which quite frequently read high depending on light conditions.

ramrod340If he is getting that it isn't at safe pressures. I think he is just being a little generous with the call.

Idaho ShooterModel7LSS,
Hogdgon's #26 shows the following loads available for the 257 Wea mag with 100 gr bullets:
80 gr H870 ...3463 fps @ 53000 CUP
69 gr IMR7828.3466 fps @ 50900 CUP
73 gr RL22 ...3503 fps @ 52500 CUP
Based on my experience with the 7mm Rem mag and 7mm STW, as well as the 264 Win mag, I would expect that any loads in the 257 STW over 3600 fps with 100 gr bullets are over advisable pressure limits. The 8mm Rem mag case (from which the STW is derived) gives just about enough internal capacity to generate about 100 to 150 fps more velocity than the 257 Wea.
The #1 is a really strong action and can handle high pressure loads as well as any rifle commonly available, but the pressure required to push a 100 gr 25 cal bullet to 4300 fps would erode the throat inside the first one hundred rounds.
If your friend's brother is still shooting his rifle after 200 rounds, and is able to reload his brass more than once without the primers falling out...... well let's just say that his velocity numbers are a little optimistic.

RMillerHe might be getting those readings on his chrony.
Is the rifle barrel 40" long ?
Maybe he still had the chrony halfway shut while shooting.
