Load info for a 357 Maximum carbine
I have a customized 357 Maximum barrel for a CVA Apex and would like some load data, shooting 180 grain SSP bullets, as well as the 158 XTP.
Does anyone load for this caliber?

Cliff, there are a bunch of guys who load the max over at GBO. Check the Handi Rifle section:

I use a max load of W296 with the Hornady 180 XTP bullet out of a 10" TC Contender. I've taken about five deer with this combo, works well as long as you put the bullet in the right spot.

I use max loads of AA 1680 and 180 XTPs in my 14 inch contender.

OK Cliff, let's have it. How did you manage to get a barrel made for an Apex? If there's a source for this I would be interested in one.

Thanks for telling us about it.

There is a source for this. Mike Bellm will re-bore a small caliber Apex barrel, in this case, a 222 Rem barrel I purchased, and rechamber for the 357 Max. He shortened the barrel to 20" and it has a 1-16" ( IIRC) for the shooting of heavier bullets.
The barrel contour was heavy so this is a short, heavy barrel that balances quite well on the Apex frame. I'm quite pleased with the work and the look; I've not loaded any ammo yet but plan to get this done shortly. Am going to the NRA show this weekend but should be able to get something loaded Sunday/Monday nights.

BTW, the last 22 caliber barrel I bought was used and paid $175 for it.

I shoot a Max in a Cadet Martini, 24" 1 in 16" barrel. Nothing but cast, have had great accuracy from Beartooth 180gr LFN GC, also the RD 359190GC pushed by 28gr AA1680. Poor luck with RD 359170GC and any lower wt. boolits. Did have great accuracy with RD359190 plain base using 6.4gr Trailboss, plain boolits with fast loads leaded my barrel. I would suggest you read the current loads by Western Powders, also visit www.357Maximum.com for great info on loads and pressures. Enjoy! Goatwhiskers
