.270 winchester progress report
I've been working with a new m70 SG .270 win and having some difficulty obtaining decent groups. I had prblems with primer cratering, and accuracy, On the advice of a gunsmith, I had him put in a wolff competetion spring. I took out the winchester hot melt glue bedding at the recoil lug and rebedded with acraglass, I bedded the rear tang area, and sanded the barrel channel as there was some contact between the barrel and the forearm of the stock.

the results- RL22 powder, nosler 150gr bt, fed 210 m primers, remington brass. 3 shot groups.

before after
56.0 gr 1.365" 2" ( 2 close , 1 flier)
56.5 1.665" 1.045"
57 1.927 0.68"
57.5 1.935 1.23" (2 touching, 1 flier)
58 1.415 0.94"
58.5 1.967 0.69"
59 1.223 1.025"

and out of curiosity, I loaded and shot 3 130 gr nosler bt over 55 gr IMR4350

group = 0.377"

I think I'm getting there with itSmiler

You are there with it! Good work and nice shooting.

There is a 140 Accubond if your interested in expensive bullets. I am loading it in a 270 WSM now for hunting and plinking with 140 gr BT's this summer.

Take that gun out varmint hunting now and get some practice with it.

John,

I have found that my Winchester (pre M70 fwt) is pretty fussy on powder and bullets. It dosn't like H48321SC and prefers greatly H4350 (or at least its Australian equivalent, AR2209).

It also doesn't like Hornady SSTs (at least in 130gr). in the 130gr weight it prefers Hornady 130gr Spite flat base (stock # 2730) and shoots these sensationally (best group so far is 3 shots into 0.261" @ 100 yards). See http://www.hunters-hut.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=194&po...storder=asc&start=30 .

The Hornady 140 gr SPBT also shoot well but only with AR2209.

Cheers & God bless,
Magnum308

I like .270s and I love model 70s Can you tell me what the SG means on your model 70 ? I have 5 model 70s 2 pre 64s and 3 standard classics. They do seem to need a little fuss in most cases to get the type of preformance i want, but once you get them shooting they are a beautifull rifle !!! ...tj3006

SG is short for supergrade.

After having shot 3 rounds through it with IMR4350 that cloverleafed- I may have to try a few more Smiler
