145gr and 160gr Speer Spt for 7x57
I recently purchased several boxes of bullets from a gentlemen that has been in the reloading business. I bought these not knowing what they are but figuring i can use them for practice. Can anyone give me some info on these bullets?

They've killed a lot of deer and stuff. I don't know if Bell used them to kill elephants or not. I kinda doubt it.

Do you have the flat based "Hot Cores" or the boat tails?

I think if you load them and use them on whitetails you will be surprisingly pleased at how they work.

My son shoots 145 Speer GS out of his 7 X 57 and the rifle seems to just knock the animals flat. My .270 on the other hand, usually ends up with a death dash of about 60 yards... We both shoot lungs when we can.

Years ago I used the 160 Speer with great results on both Deer and elk. The speeds the 7x57 sends them at are perfect for the bullet.
Good hunting!

The 145 Speer has been a great performer for me in a 280. If your rifle likes them, I think you will be pleased with the results in you 7mm.

I killed 5 deer with 5 shots with them.

They are excellent bullets for deer and they work just fine on elk btw...

My all time favorite Mule deer bullet in my 7x57s is the 130 gr. Speer flat base or boatail at about 3150 FPS, I also have used that bullet in the .284 and 7mm-06 with perfect results..It will give full penetration broadside and a big exit hole..

They are much more than practice bullets.

Hot-Cors are one of the better 'non-premium' bullets in my opinion. I've used lots of the 145's in 7x57 and 7-08 at 2700-2800 FPS - excellent accuracy and performance on deer.

Jack O'Connor and his wife used the Speer 160s in their 7x57 rifles to kill all kinds of African game. On one safari 19 shots took 17 head of game. Jack killed a ~1000 pound elk with one shot with this load, and plenty of eland, zebra, etc. They are great bullets, premium bullets are simply not required in this cartridge.

I don't know what bullet Jack used in his 7mm (he used a 7mm Rem Mag on one safari) but it was the Sierra 160gr that his wife Eleanor used in her 7x57 to take a lot of game.

Nevertheless I used a lot of the 145gr Speer flat base bullets in my 7x57 to good effect and some 160gr Speer in my 7x61 S&H. Overall I preferred Sierra bullets in my early 7mms and now also use these in my 7mm-08 and 6.5/06.

You should have stopped with the phrase "I don't know"... Wink

According to Jack himself (page 93 of "The Hunting Rifle") Eleanor used the Speer 160 bullet in front of 52 grains of No 4831 to shoot elk, black bear, Dall and Stone sheep, mule deer and Rocky Mountain goats. Her bag with this combination included two big bull kudu, roan antelope, several bull sable and about two dozen zebra - mostly with one shot.
