Just looked at the new Shooting Times at a news stand. Had an article about a new Savage with a heavy 30" barrel and this rifle was shooting 3 shot .850" groups at 500 yards. I did not read all of the article because the rifle was not a left hand model. The rifle was Stainless Steel with a laminated stock and weight 12 lbs or more and had a retail price of $12??. I guess this would make a really good beanfield rifle for whitetail deer. This sure seems like it put some of the custom gunmakers on notice that you can have a really accurate rifle for not a lot of money. I don't want one as I would have one less excuse for my misses.

Do you have any more info on this rifle?
It sound too good. This company is noted for a fair price. I agree with you, the custom boys better watch out.
I would buy one in a minute for sure.

I'd like to know a bit more about how they got it. I don't think it was ordered anonymously. I'm wondering if it was some sort of "hand picked". But, regardless it shot like a house of fire. It did under 2" at 500 yds with 7 different loads. In general factory loads shot just as good as handloads. They said there was no special work done with handloads except making sure the seating depth was consistant. Kind of makes you wonder why everyone is getting so anal about zero runnout on ammo....weighing bullets.....weighing cases....etc etc. Evidently a good rifle and barrel can shoot almost anything good.....this one sure did.

They might have gotten one 3 shot group to go under an inch. Conditions must have been absolutely perfect and all the moons lined up just right. Some 600 yard bench rest rigs wont do this .

I have never seen factory ammo shoot as good as hand loads in a long range rifle or bench rifle. It just does not happen. If you want to shoot good groups top notch ammo is a must. Runout is important just as is good cases, consistent neck wall thickness, bullets, powder charges, good barrels, etc, etc.

2" at 500 yards is under 1/2 minute of angle and its hard to belive that any factory rifle can do this consistently. The only execption might be a Grunig 300 meter rifle in 6br and they ususally average about 1.5-2" at 300m for 10 shots.
