I decided to take a pass on it. As Allen suggested, I'm going to hold out for one originally chambered in 300 HH.

Did the pre 53's have steel bottom plates? I am thinking they did. Just to let ya know I saw one yesterday year around 1958-60 with a crappy replaced stock for $600.00. It had aluminum bottom metal and condition was fair. It also had two screws on the left hand side of the reciever these were plugged and defiantely for a rear peep.

I will keep looking.

ALL pre 64 M-70 are magnum action length, so you can build a 300 H&H or 375 H&H off that gun, but will require some magazine alteration or replacement...

The pre war gun will require a new safty if you intend to use it with a scope and Tilden made a replacement if you can find one..I have one on my 300 H&H that was built up from an 06 on a pre war action...

Be sure and check out the drill and tap and be sure it is done properly and lines up the scope well, a lot of butchers were out there back when....

The action alone is worth about $450.00 so $500 seems OK to me but I would sure rather find a pre 64 for the same price as opposed to a pre war action because of the safety business...Also it should not be tapped on the left side but on the right (bolt handle) side for a peep..that left hand two holes was probably for the old and popular Stith Mounts that affixed there in the rear and in the rear sight dovetail for the front...In which case I would offer the fellow $400 or a tad more, for the gun and find an old set Stiths or shoot it with irons as is. Those old stiths are available in the gunlist..

As this is a transitional is has a safety similar to the post war versions. I say similar because it's not 'L' shaped, but straight. So a scope is not a problem.



It does have the clover leaf tang.



I'm not going to go for it. I'm going to hold out to see if I can find one originally chamberred in 300 H&H.

In the latest issue of gun list there are two pre 64 M-70s in 300 H&H in 90% condition and very good condition? for $795 each..You will not beat those prices I don't think. However with that transitional saftey the gun in question is a very good buy I think. Just scope it and shoot it if the holes are good.
