My new Tikka

My new Tikka (All weather 7mmRM) is shooting strangely. The groups show no real consistency, they can be 1 MOA opening up to something far larger. I have even seen straight lines on the paper instead of a "group". The scope is a 8x56 Swarovski and rings are the original Tikka Optilock. I use a Harris bipod. The rifle has not been bedded or tampered with in any way.

Suggestions ?

I'd double check the rings, then the scope.

A friend had a problem with the scope or one of the mounts slipping -- can't remember at the moment.

Thanks John, the rings are not loose and nor is the scope. Could not tighten any screws on the thing at all.

The strange thing is that the first round of each group is almost always far way from the other ones which are often really tight, the holes touching each other.

GBF, almost sounds like a bedding problem. Have you checked where the rifle is touching the stock? I have one I sanded in a few spots to prevent contact (bolt and barrel channel). HTH, Dutch.

1. check the action screws
2. remove the bipod and shoot from a sandbag rest

Are the 'straight lines' vertical or horizontal?
Is the ammunition factory loaded, or are these handloads?
Has the rifle ever shot well?

the synthetic stock is not very rigid in the forend and the harris bipod probably isnt helping it. try shooting off a sandbag. I have the same gun in .308 that shoots great.

Iï¿½ll try dismounting the bipod.
By the way, I see great difference in performance in handloaded and factory ammo.

I found that with my Tikka, when putting the stock back on you had to be very carefull when tightening the screws. If you had the action slightly misaligned, then the forend would touch the barrel on one side when tighening the screws. Acuracy went out the window. I do not think that this is your problem though, and would agree that it is the tripod causing the problem.
