pinotguyInsights on 6.5x63 Messner (Magnum).
I'd love to hear any information regarding this cartridge. I found a minimal amount of data elsewhere on the web, but would like to hear what members here have to say.
Specifically, I'm interested in cartridge dimensions (maybe even a cartridge drawing), sources for brass and ammunition, reloading data and dies, and any additional history. I discovered this is a relatively new cartridge created in 2000 by a M. Messner and that is seems to be based on the 9.3x64 Brenneke but that's the extent of what I could find out.
Thanks in advance.

Not to be snotty, but that would look funny! Or are we talking rebated, and .477 on the rim?

Bent,
You were right!! sorry for the typo!

Don't know what I was looking when I was copying the data. Not easy to post data with format here...hence the error. Sorry again
It should read :
Base Outer Diameter
0.497" / 12.62mm

Idaho Sharpshooterthis reads an awful lot like the 30-06 necked down to 6,5mm...possibly a variation of the 256 Newton, or 6,5-06...?

Idaho Sharpshooterspoke too soon...the data threw me off. We have a historian here with some serious $$$ I think! 8mmx63mm Swede circa 1932, made from the 10,75x68mm. I believe our gentleman is using the 10,75 case and necking it down to 6,5mm.
Elementary my dear Watson!

pinotguyThanks for the technical data. I was able to confirm that the parent case is in fact the 9.3x64 Brenneke so that complicates things a little. From what I can gather, this sounds like a pretty potent cartridge.
Please - keep the responses coming.

You are right, Joseph Messner ( France ) designed it from the 9.3mmx64mm Brenneke.
If you are interested, just contact him :

Just take into account that there are more affordable alternatives, just like the old .264 WinMag

Interestingly enough, this cartridge is having good press in Europe, specially in France, since it's dubbed as being the "first french Magnum"...

Also, many press releases seem to agree that it has the performance level of a 7mmRM with the raport of a .270Win...IMHO...pure marketing hype.
Of course, it follows the actual trend of being beltless, since it was unveiled in year 2000.
Also, and just for the record, Mr. Messner released another version, now a rimmed one, called the "6.5mm x 63mm R Messner Magnum" and now both offering are CIP sanctioned.
My guess is that its popularity is also based in the fact that it's very easy to chamber since a Mauser 98K action will suffice.
Personally, I don't see any evidence of nothing new under the sun. But I celebrate the fact that indivuals are still developing at their own risk and financial burden, new cartridges.
Mean performance with a GPA 114gr bullet from a Voere ( 24") rifle is 3313 fps, using 64gr of Tubal 7000.
Please let me know if more details are needed.
Best regards,
You can find a

As far as I know cases are made by
Horneber for the factory loads

Rusty HookAccording to my Nosler reloading Guide No. 4, the 6.5 x 64 Brenneke is the European factory standardization of the 6.5-06, but it is actually built on the 270 case instead of the 3006 case. The 270 brass is longer in the neck to prevent it from being chambered in a 3006 by mistake.
Load data can be used from any manual providing load data for the 6.5-06. The round is about 200 fps faster than the 6.5 x 55 is with 140-grain bullets, and about 200 fps slower than the .264 Winchester magnum is, which is a very useful velocity range. For shot action guns, the 6.5 x 284 will come very close to the same velocities and may actually provide slightly better accuracy in well made guns...Rusty.
