35 Whelen ????
I just got a CVA Apex in 35 Whelen and was wondering what kind of loads can be made for this round. I plan on using it for hunting in brush areas and also open country ... max range would be 350-400 yards but most shots will be 200 yards and closer....

I was thinking of make up some 200gr cast .357 mag bullets and use them for close range point blank to 70 yards... but have not realy done a whole lot of resuerch on long range loads for the 35 Whelen....

Find a 225 grain bullet...you should be able to stabilize it with any twist.....

The .35 Whelen is capable of longer ranges than most believe....know your range and your trajectory.....good for 400 yards.

Noslers web sight has data for a 225gr Accubond and using 59.0grs of RL-15 and acheving 2789fps that should do 400 yards on my max side...

I am not sure there test barrle length but I do have a 25" barrle so that should help..the scope I am planing on using is a SpringField 6X40mm with the 7.62 rectical. If I keep the bullet close to 2750 fps it should work ok ...

At that speed I use the 20824 rule.....easy to remember as the numbers are related!

2" high at 100
0" at 200
8" low at 300
2 feet low at 400 and
4 feet low at 500

Now all you have to do is estimate the range....
but to 300 yards one can still shoot right at an elk!

With my 35Whelen imp. I have taken white tails out past 350 with it, using 225 grain bullets, and H-380.

While I really like my Whelen I use it for moderate range hunting. When distances get long I want to use a dedicated long range rifle like my 7MM RM. Having hunted a lot of species over 35 years and having seldom needed to shoot anything much past 350 yards except antelope.
