.308 Win Vs .308 Win 40 degree

Anyone ever build or load for the 40 degree version on this? Are dies readily avalible? Is it really worth the extra work?

I am in the middle of a small project and this seems to be the latest in my own self made road blocks.

Are you talking about an Ackley version? I have never seen the advantage of the AI in the 308 case.

I would not do an improved vesion of the .308 win case . Many do, I have heard guys say there .260 AI picks up 400 FPS over the standard.
Only cause they over load it...tj3006

Considering the "gain" which would be afforded to the Ackley-ization of the case this is a project which can't be justified by sane men. While there may well be some technical merit to the Improved version, the actual practical side is a very different story. I shoot 6 different Ackley cartridges, including the .30-06 AI. I would not do it again. On the other hand, my .257 AI is the best of the bunch, and the .243 AI is close to the .308 or the '06 IMP. There is too much work and expense and time involved when fireforming the cases. The .308 is not a case which would gain sufficiently to warrant the "Improvment."

308Sako-on your 06 AI what did you find for gains, and was it originally an o6 that you did work with and then punched?

Mark, What I wanted was something different and that's what I got. I had had no previous luck with the various .300's but still love the .308 bore. In hard terms, I guess you can say that 2850 ft/sec's (most accurate load) with 180grain bullets is a gain, but I can get as high as 2995 ft/sec's as well (R22). The fastest load shoots decently as well. The big Sako it is built on gives a total of 6 rounds as well, though I would hate to have to need that type of capability!

The .308 Winchester was basicly "improved" when they designed it. It already has minimal body taper and a short neck (2 of the 3 main "improvements"). Going to a 40 degree shoulder (the 3rd "improvement") will gain nothing. If you want an "improved" .308 get a 30-06.

Thanks for the info I found it to be helpful and wrote most of it in my project notebook. I do have a 30.06 and never seen it as an improvement over my .308, but they both kill deer.
