the_captainThat 9,3x70 looks like quite the cartridge! I have not heard of that one before. Is it well-used in Europe? Where can one find more information and specifics?

jens poulsen... Hi Capt!
The 9.3x70 DWM magnum will do some
900 m/sec(2950 F/sec) with a 250 grain bullet!.
The original DWM load with a 292 grain bullet
of 2770 F/Sec

. How does that compare with the .340 Weatherby or .375 H&H?

Charles_HelmThanks -- very nice "family picture."

lawndartHi Jens,
I am sorry I missed this thread when it first came out. Does anybody make 9,3 x 70 Brass that you know of?
That looks like a screamer of a cartridge (on both ends!).

<9.3x62>Cool pic, but you forgot the 9.3x57...

I've got a 9.3x64 in the works (Mark Penrod has agreed to put it all togther on a 1951 model 70 action). I am REALLY looking forward to that rifle.
I thought I had talked myself out of a 9.3x66, but that pic has got me thinking again. And I do have a spare pre-64 model 70 action laying around. Ugh! There goes another $2000...
10 February 2006, 06:51
<9.3x62>Lawndart:
Where are you getting 9.3x66 supplies? Just curious. If huntington's could get cases and I could scrouge up some dies I might be ready to pull the trigger on a 9.3x66 project...
TIA
10 February 2006, 08:54
lawndartI scrounged sixty cases from Europe.
You can get 30-06 basic brass from Huntingtons, and form that.
I am having PT&G cut me a reamer to send to Redding. I will have them build me a Type S FL sizing die, and a Micrometer seating die. They can also build standard dies.
My reamer and gauges are going out tomorrow a.m. (I missed the FedEx truck today) to Jim Kobe. If you send him your rifle he can use my reamer to cut your chamber. Then the dies from Redding will fit perfectly.
Once there are five or ten of these rifles up and running we can pool resources to order 1,000 cases from Sako, or a wholesaler in Europe, Canada or Australia.

<9.3x62>Thanks for the info. Yes, I had heard that Kobe had a 9.3x66 project brewing.
Funny you mention Dave Kiff and the 9.3x66 reamer as about a year or so ago I was just about to be the guy that ordered the reamer. I had the drawings (he faxed it to me), but I backed off at the last minute because of case availability. IIRC, the guy at Huntington's said he didn't think Sako ever had any intention of importing cases, but who knows if that it true or not.
Did you get the standard CIP spec reamer (I think Kiff actually made the reamers for Sako) or did you have one made up with a shorter throat and leade? Kiff mentioned both as possible reamers...
What action are you using?
Have you ever had/used a 9.3x64?
11 February 2006, 10:57
lawndart9,3 x 62,
I am using the original CIP style. When Sako went to the detachable box magazines they shortened their ammo from 87mm to 85mm. I am using a Sako A-III action, originally in 30-06. Its magazine box is 92.5 mm long, so the 87mm version of the cartridge should fit just fine.
The case can be built by using 30-06 basic brass from Huntingtons. If there is enough demand I will have a reamer made to manufacture a file/trim die.
On the side of the barrel it could say 9,3/30-06 and 9,3 x 66 Sako. When I go over to hunt moose and deer with cewe, boha and husky I will shoot up several boxes of ammunition to have brass for back home. I will be visiting the Sako factory, and will try to arrange for some cases to go to Huntingtons.
I am starting to build a 9,3 x64 on a Mark X action. I'll post pictures as that comes along.
This is the Golden era of rifles and reloading.

packrattusnongratusI have been thinking 9.3X64 on F/S CZ originally in 9.3X62. Just haven't bought the gun yet. Any ideas as to the feasability of going on to the 66MM case? Packy
12 February 2006, 06:59
lawndartThe 9.3x64 will kick the crap out of you in that rifle.
The 9.3 x 66 will be milder, but still stiff in the recoil department.
LD
12 February 2006, 18:25
packrattusnongratusL D So you think it best to leave one in the original X 62mm case? I'm not enamoured of .458 recoil. I've had two of those and a Marlin 1895. I think the Marlin to be almost as bad with the heaviest bullets. Just not fun. My 58 rollingblock with 100 + grains is enough and that has a real heavy contour Sharon barrel that came as a rifled blank. Thanks for the thoughts. The 9.3 is fun to contemplate. Will be shooting a 57 mm one this afternoon. Later Packrattusnongratus

Hi Jens,
here are some more.
Left to right:
9,3x57mm, 9,3x62mm, 9,3x63mm, 9,3x64mm, 9,3x65R (rimmed version of 9,3x64), 9,3x66mm, 9,3x70mm, 9,3x74R
And my new favorite:
.333 Jeffery Flanged (300 grains bullet, 2150 fps,SD = .386!) besides a 9,3x74R

PRNG,
I would leave that rifle as a 9,3 x 62. Stick to premium 250 grain bullets (North Fork, Swift) as well. They will drop anything in North America, and the recoil will be very tolerable. Those are great little rifles; very well balanced, and quick to the shoulder.

lawndartHusky,
I had a girlfriend that looked like the 9,3x74 when I first met her. After a year she looked like the .333 Jeffreys Flanged.

I´m looking forward to trying the North Forks! Are they similar in design to the Rhino bullet? Minus the moly of course.
Last weekend we installed the recoil reducers in my .416 but honestly I couldn´t feel much of a difference. Well they´re there, at least they add weight.
I picked up a little beauty of a Sako on Saturday (a .22LR mod 54) and I now have a Brno ZG47 in 8x60. Husky and I are serioulsy getting into building the 8x68, work will be started in the fall!
14 February 2006, 00:54
lawndartCewe,
Try shooting that rifle with the butt pad in front of your nose by about 8 cm. I'm sure when you pull the trigger you will see how mild the recoil now is.

After we split she lost all the weight, got a breast augmentation and married a dentist. Now she has two kids in college and a BMW in the garage.

ceweLawndart: No that wasn´t nice! And on Valentines Day! Husky and I managed to locate two nice Huskys in 8x57JRS that we´ll be turning into 8x68´s in the fall That will be one interesting round to take on our Scottish deerhunt in -07.
14 February 2006, 21:28
lawndartI need to move to Europe for a couple of years just to snag some of those nice rifles to play with.
Scottish deerhunt sounds good.
15 February 2006, 13:09
ceweI made a mistake, it´s 8x57JS and not the flanged round.
One of them is pretty much mint!

Didn´t I tell you mercury is ment for rectal thermometers?
And I sold you a Brno M21, not a ZG 47. It just happened to have a ZG47 safety.
The Sako you found is a beauty. Wrong home, I should have got it. Damn.
Lawndart, Europe is not a bad place for finding rifles. Two hours ago this one fell into my humble possession for 11,50€. Well, I had to throw in a PPK and some other small pistols of lesser consequence. Interested? 10,75x68 to be refinished and all that jazz

ceweboha: I have first dibs on that one! You wouln´t dare sell it to anyone else first!
Thanks for setting me straight on what i bought...well you know me!

The same to you!
What I mentioned about "the world isn't fair" was ofcourse our Swedish gun laws. but I am already making a new plan. Maybe you have to sell one of the Hva 8x57 IS to me later on...
have you called Ken?

And we might have to start looking for a 7x64, a 9.3x62 and a 10.75x68.
Did you know that I do not own a .404? It´s a shame I admit..
Can´t you move to Finland?
I managed to erase Ken´s info...would you please resend it?
