Happy B-day 7STW...
it was twenty years ago my friend Layne Simpson recreated the 280 DuBeil/7mm Mashburn Super by necking down the 8mm Rem Mag to 7mm and christening it the "Shooting Times Westerner".
It's still a pretty good choice for any NA game where the distance might be a bit longer.

I thought his .358 STA was a better creation.

Both are excellent and his wildcats lead the factories to get off of their duffs and pay attention to what the customers want. Hence all of the "new" cartridges you have today. Some good and some just OK. But Layne kick started the whole enchilada. I had a 7STW built immediately after reading about it in the Shooting Times magazine article with a Dan Lilja 26" barrel on a 700 action. Man, was that a shooter. Sold it 1yr later at a profit as the cartridge was just becoming popular. Just bought a Win. 70 Classic in 7STW recently and thought about converting it to a 404 Jef. but maybe I'll shoot it first to see how accurate it is.

Happy Birthday, I think that the 7STW is to fast
unless you are shooting at 600 to a 1000yds. At
a range that long.
But for hunting its just to fast. Thats my Opion.

Na Man, don't you know speed kills. Too fast really?

Well I guess that's why the make more than one flavor of ice cream.

Happy birthday 7STW.

I bought a Savage 112 BVSS in 7mm and rechambered it about a week later after accuracy testing it a little. It is the stainless steel, fluted 26" barrel, single shot action, in the fat laminated stock. Shoots in the 1/2moa range out to 400yds when the wind is not howling and I do my part. I shot the biggest elk I have ever seen in the wild with it several years ago.

Happy birthday!!

Guess I should get the 70 Classic Stainless out and do some long-range celebrating.

Can't seem to comprehend the "too fast" crack. Confused "The faster the better", I always say. Big Grin

waaaaaay to fast.
anything that shoots a sd .300 bullet faster than 2500 is just wasted powder.
and then you don't need the modern super bullets.

but thats just my opinon, for those who shoot deers at 500m the 7mm STW is probably a gift from above.

Steffen,

higher velocities translate to flatter trajectory, and fewer misses within one's maximum shooting range. Not all of us haul a solid bench and bags on our hunting trips. I did some Elk hunting last year with my 9,3x62 CZ because I was mostly hunting blowdowns. 200yds would hve been a long shot. A bull I know would have gone over 400 stepped out at the edge of a clearing every bit of 400yds away. If I'da had my STW you would have read about a new Idaho record and top twenty world wide.

I shoot a 7mm STW and two .358 STA's. They are three of the most accurate rifles I own. I salute Layne Simpson everytime I go to my range. Good shooting.

More power to the 7STW. I'll just keep on shooting my 7mm Rem. It goes to 600 yds no problem. Thats the farest I've shot it accurately.

I like my "dated belted magnum" 7mm STW. I am headed to the Texas panhandle in a few weeks for another pronghorn........

The 7 STW is as good as it gets for a light caliber rifle for use anywhere in the world!

This cartridge is a joke-a part from the proven old fashion type cartridges.

if 140's at 3450 and 160's at 3200 is bad,...I guess the STW is useless....ha...I have two of them,....
