Custom rifle project on a '09 Argentine Mauser Action
Hello, I'm new to this forum and thought I'd ask this group of seasoned shooters for their opinion. Let me say this is not a gun I planning on ever selling, this is a purely selfish endever. So forget the economics involved.

First, what is your opinion of this action? Second, which barrel and trigger maker would you recommend? And third, I'd really like to hear (or see to be honest) what type of engraving you think looks best on a bolt action rifle (I'm mainly a shotgun guy and have always favored tight scroll or rose and scroll I'm just not sure this would be appropriate on a rifle)?

Anyway, thanks for your time. I look forward to reading your responses.

Mike

The caliber will be a 30-.06 and will be used in western Montana (Huson area) for elk, deer, and sheep.

First I'd recommend that it be sent to Blanchards in SLC for case hardening.

Then install a Timney trigger and a Dakota (or Lapour) 3-position safety. Have Jim Kobe weld on a new bolt and ask Scrollcutter to do the engraving.....His work is superb.

While the action is at Jim's place for the bolt handle he can attach a Shilen (or any) barrel you want. He can also get it blued for you and I assure you that it'll be gorgeous but it should be stocked before bluing.

You didn't ask about the stock but that's another issue entirely.

1909's come up really nice but yes get them case hardened. I have finished .404 J on a 1909 and am only $520.00 away from picking it up, but I reckon it owes me $8k AUS, so there not cheap but like you I wanted do it önce.

Here are some pics.

As far as the stock, I've got a nice piece of claro with fiddle from butt to fore end (the other pieces are French, for up coming shotgun projects).

PC - very nice looking rifle. The finish I'm considering looks like the following:

but I still haven't made up my mind.

Now THAT'S an awesome piece of claro. It'll look gorgous!!!

When you find someone that does the color case for your Argentine, please post it here.....I really like that too!!!

Sure looks like you're going to have a true masterpiece.

Thanks Vap, we'll see. You never really know until you start cutting.

PC, what engraving pattern did you use on the receiver and the bolt? Is that a three or four panel knob?

I had mine done in 6mm Rem which is perfect for this action.
I think 30-06 is too long with anything longer than 150 grain bullets.

Utah,

I think it's 4 panels.............................I handled 6 months ago for stock fitting so I am a little sketchy, now all I need to do is find the last $500.00 as it's finished and ready for pick up.

Your rifle will look great with the cas colour !! and you have awsome wood as well.

when I pick it up I will post pics of the finished product.

I think you are correct. I had considered building a .338 Gibbs on an Argentine, but the magazine is too short......
