Well my firearm addiction is in full swing so I am thinking through my next project. I am looking for a middle range rifle for whitetails, mulies, and the occasional elk. I think I have settled on the 338-06 as I want something unique and less mainstream and this round seems to have quite a bit of popularity.

Cost of reloading dies and brass is not a factor in my decision as it is a sunk cost for me. Any positive or negative thoughts about this round?

I'm very high on the 338-06.

Had Rem and Win bought out something like this instead of SAUMS they'd be selling better I think.

The 338-06 is nearly as powerful as the 338 Magnum and has the advantage of less weight and one more down the magazine and very cheap brass as it's from 30-06.

I've always liked and owned 8mm-06s. The .338-06 brings just a little more beef to the table with great bullet selection. Sensible choice. roger

Deadly, accurate, efficient, plenty of range, practical for anyone who rolls their own.

I never found wanting in mine. To me, it could have been to the US what the 6.5x55 is in Sweden. I think as a game cartridge, it is the 'improved '06"

I should've kept mine. I wound up with a 9.3x62 and really like it. But the 338-06 is a wonderful round! Most of the folks I know seem to like the 225 grainers...I prefered the 250's. I think you will REALLY enjoy this round for serious hunting.

I don't see how you can go wrong with any version of the 06. I have a .338-06 and will be taking it on it's first hunt this year along with my .35 Whelen. Haven't bloodied either of these rifles yet and looking forward to a successful hunt. My .338-06 is pushing 200 grain bullets at 2800 fps and getting solid 1" groups all day or as long as my shoulder can take it. I figure it is as good as any 300 yard rifle and can be stretched out further with practice. I just don't take shots beyond 300 yards, kind of a personal limit. I hope I'm sneaky enough to get much closer.

I have rifles in .270, .280, 8mm-06, .338-06, and .35 Whelen, plus a .25-06 being built right now. As you can see I defiantly have a thing for cartridges made from the best all around cartridge of them all and yes I have two chambered in .30-06.
