GraskopInformation 6.5 x 57 Brno mod 20
I would like to get some input from you guys out there that knows these rifles. I have a chance to buy a Brno (mod 20) 6.5 x57 in beautiful condition used but still very nice.
Want to hunt Springbok to Kudu. Is this the right caliber

Terry BlauwkampI don't know much about the rifles, but I have been loading the 6.5x57 for years.
It is very nice, sort of like a 257 Robts. The 129 gr Hornadys kill Deer very nicely.
Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

<9.3x62>I am not familiar with the model 20, but I have some familiarity with the 21 and 22 and they are wonderful rifles.
Regarding the 6.5x57 - I have a custom one I had built here stateside. It is a reasonable choice for game up to smallish kudu, though if I were going to hunt kudu-sized game with some regularity I'd probably opt for something a more powerful like an 8x57.
Anyway, good luck...
BTW, welcome to the forum...

I see you're from South Africa and there's a whole lot of folks there that can answer the question better than vetrans of a few plains game safaris. However since you asked.....The 6.5 X 57 with a 140 grain bullet at 2,700'/sec is adequate for the task.... but I assure you that one day you'll look from behind that tree at the largest Kudu you've ever seen and it's 275 yards out there and that's the day you'll wish you had a .30-06 or a .300 magnum.

Savage99If the rifle is as nice as you say and the price is right I would buy it anyway.
Can you describe it some more?

Interesting, learn something new everyday...
Hornady and Sierra make a 160, and Norma still sells the 156 Oryx. Lapua makes a 155. And there are any number of premium 140s, such as the X, A-frame, Partition, Bear Claw, etc. So the heavier weights can still be found in at least adequate supply. Also, the 6.5x57 (in CIP spec) is quite long throated, IIRC, making it a natural candidate for the 140-160s gr bullets.

AtkinsonI have owned many of them (model 21H and the manlicher version the 22F) and IMO they are the finest made Commercial rifle every made...I have one in 9,3x62, and its a jewell, but not exactly original...
Of interrest to Alf is reference to an early Brno in 9.3x62 in the March-April 1991 issue of Rifle Magazine, no. 134, where in the author claims he saw an advertisement of one..which bolsters the fact that I saw one at the big Reno gun show with a big price on it, and a claim that it was an original M-21H, I can only say it appeared so, but so does mine and it is not...
