So several have said .35 Whelen should I build that instead of a .338-06? I like the fact the Whelen is a classic but the .338-06 sounds so inviting.

No, go with the 338-06. You will be happier.
It will do everything the 35 will do on the top end and beat it at the low end. 180gr accords would. Be perfect deer medicine.

Ok with out debating the 338-06, and 9.3-62 vs 35 Whelen saga, why not kick it up a notch and think 358 Norma, or 35 STW, or 416 Taylor?

At that point I think we are going beyond my ability to handle the recoil.

Yep, and from your own words.

The 338-06 will do that perfectly. But you already own a 30-06 and it will handle those tasks.

Don't forget the 6.5x55, it is still a good choice and would not be lacking. With very mild recoil to boot.

Well Donald; That is a nice line up of rifles you have. I have more than I need myself so I'm "forcing" myself not to buy any more - if that's possible. A lot of my guns were purchased on a pretty tight budget, so a few quality short cuts were taken. I've decided to up-grade the ones I have, you know triggers, mounts, stocks, refinishing - that sort of thing. If I wanted to round out your list I would add a .375H&H in a Ruger # 1 just for the nostalgia etc. fwiw --- John 303.

A 6.5x55 light weight build is already planned. Hope to buy the action for it in the next couple weeks.

I think today I might have found the next one. Remington 700 .270 WSM Of the WSM's the .270 caught my attention most plus I don't have a regular .270. It is brand new plastic stocked (That will change). She wants it gone and said I could have it for $450.
What say ye?

I picked up an orphan a couple of years ago, it was a 270WSM Winchester Model 70 lefty. Very accurate rifle with my hand loads that duplicate 270 Win ballistics (130 gr at 3100 fps). Used it to take a black bear here in NY last season. I'm pleased with it.

At least you know your limitations.
