A customer brought this into the shop yesterday.
No SN, no markings anywhere above the stockline.
Marked, "FN 1948" on bottom of receiver behind lug. Sporter barrel marked, "30-06" under, "Joe Hicks". Walnut stock with black forend tip, black plastic gripcap and a very hard, dry rotted "White Line" recoil pad. Rifle has Redfield receiver and front barrel band sights.
Anyone have any info on the name "Joe Hicks"?
I have pictures but unable to post them. If someone could help me out I could send them to you and you can post them here. Trying to get some info for the old guy.

I think he is a gunsmith in Kansas. Porter Gun Repair I think?

Great old classic semi-custom from the 50s. Replace the pad and the safety flag with an original, straighten the comb, reshape the grip and add a steel grip cap, add an ebony forend tip, go hunting. I would not D&T an unmolested C-ring FN Deluxe but that's just me.

The shroud is but the flag probably isn't. There appears to be a small suspicious looking screw on top of the shroud too. Earlier commercial FNs like those on some HVAs had military flags.

Looks like the old Buehler (sp. ?) two position safety or somesuch- what's throwing me is the shroud isn't the streamlined variety.

I think the bolt shroud is original I have a commercial FN date stamped 1851 and it has the same style shroud and safety. I have a Husqvarna from the late 1940's to maybe early 1950's that had the original mauser type flag safety. I aso have a few J.C. Higgins m50s and they all have the two position safety.
I think $400 is a fair price for the rifle.

Bishop stock, Buehler safety, Redfield receiver sight, Redfield banded front ramp, all first class over the counter medicine for an FN action back in the '50's.

Well worth the asking price. Might benefit from glass bedding, and I wouldn't hesitate to D&T for a scope. You are not painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa here.

Some may well already be D&T and sporting bases and rings.

I've found prices will differ between auction and over-the-counter.

True. I used to import Mausers & Brnos from Europe & Canada for much less than they cost in the USA. Harder to do now.

Usually but not always.....

I was at an auction earlier this year when a bidder must have misread the catalougue. They had been selling shotgun cartridges by the 250 case, when the last lot came up it was for a single box of 25 shells. You can guess what happened. The auctioner brought the hammer down damn quick on that lot I can tell you.

The Mausers(ususlally Interarm or FN derived) and Bruno's still turn up but there are a lot of Parker Hales and BSA's with the occassional Carl Gustov and Husqvarna.
