CZ 550- Unusual rifle
This is a bone-stock, unfired CZ 550 in 30-06.
As you can see, it does not have the ususal CZ dovetail scope mounting system. The receiver is profiled like a Remington 700, Rem 700 bases fit perfectly. Appears to be factory, it also has a 3 position side safety. S/n is A0796, importer is "MRI MPLS MN". Anyone out there have any info on this model variant? Thanks, Russ Green.

Haven't seen one like that before, but would rather have the usual setup. Where did you come across it?

Came in on a trade at a gunshop I haunt. It sat forever, they begged me to take it off their hands, got it for a song. Thought at first it was a model 3, but I think not, as the Model 3's took M70 post 64 bases. It is unfired but no box.

Update- I think it's a CZ 550 "Minnesota", reduced drop at heel for optics only, no cheekpiece and a beautiful tigerstriped stock.

That's a CZ 550 "Minnesota." They were imported for a few years, I saw one in 30-06 awhile back. The CZ 550 manual mentions this variant, but provides no explanation for why they were built this way.

Even though I prefer the std set up...I prefer good deals even more! thumb

Nice catch!! I actually looked for one of these several years ago - but it wasn't a successful search. As Oregon45 said, it is listed in my CZ manual which came with a 550 American bought new in 2002. Got any photos of the whole rifle? Stock appears to have a good bit of fiddleback.

I'm not sure where i saw it but I was under the impression they offered some round topped actions. I tried to inquire about them but CZ never responded.

I have seen one in 270 Win., think that MRI was importing them about 1990-ish.
Nice walnut. thumb
IIRC, the one I saw had a three-position side safety that works in the correct direction, forward to fire. Wink
Should be an excellent rifle.
Sort of like a Ruger Round Top.
The first Ruger M77's offered that as an option instead of the integral bases, some preferred it that way. Those took Remington M700 bases too.

They were cheaper to make.
Isn't three position safety std. equipment now? My 550 'Medium' allows bolt manipulation on safe in the middle position.
