How do you tell if the gun is from south carolina and does it make a real difference. I have heard they are more accurate but do not know
thanks

look at the crown of the barrel.....the S. C. ones have a target (recessed) crown

New Haven rifles have serial numbers that start with a G, followed by the number. S.C. guns are issued an alphabet soup of three letters, then the number.

The S.C. guns seem to be more accurate than the New Haven rifles on average.

But they have That Trigger! Which causes much angst among the faithful.

I have four of them here.....all the serial numbers start with the number "35" and then three letters followed by five numbers

I'm amongst the faithful and suffer no such angst!

Oops! I knew that...but was fighting with the laptop while trying to type. Cool

I don't know if I would be considered a faithful or not...I have a bunch of New Haven 70s and four FN 70s... I prefer the S.C. models...enclosed trigger or not.

Another quick difference is that every S.C. Model 70 I have seen, whether blue or stainless has a stainless extractor.

Vapo, I have several New Haven (FNs) with target crowns. Are you saying the crown is recessed even more on the S.C. barrels?

Exactly when the recessed/target crowns started I don't know.....but all the M-70 rifles I have prior to SC have the usual 11 deg taper typical of Winchester. The SC models all have the target style crown.....I will give that it's possible that some later "classics" also had the target crown.

I had a terrible trigger on mine but I had a gunsmith lighten it down to 3lbs. It is very accurate and it has much tighter tolerances compared to my NH SS Classic 375.

It is day and night a better rifle.

Sincerely,
Thomas

Got one in a 3006 sporter. Shot it probably 250 rounds. Adjusted the trigger as light as I could safely. Pulled it out of the stock again for something and noticed the stock had crack behind the recoil lug. Its boxed up ready to send back to S.C. Think Ill try Fedx this time used UPS before. They acted like it really put em out to ship a pistol I had worked over. The mod. 70 does have a deep crown.
