Moutain/African plains rifle survey
The last Weatherby I owned was the "Ultra Light" in 300 Weatherby. That rifle, though well built, and accurate enough for 3 shots was just to light for me. There is something about a 300 Weatherby, sitting in an 8lb rifle, that just doesn't work. Squeaze, bang, wow! nut Eeker

To get comfortable with a rifle, it has to be shot, and I'm not a fan of muzzle brakes, so I sold that rifle and bought a Model 70 in 338 Win Mag that weighs in at about 8 3/4+ lbs. What a difference in recoil, and not any harder to carry.

I've never figured out why a lot of guys worry about an extra pound or two on their rifle, but not the 30-40lbs. (or worse) around their waist?......

Lordy Lordy, ya don't need a custom Whammer Doodle to shoot Plains game in Africa. Last year I scored 100% with a 1966 vintage .30-06 Mannlicher-Schoenauer (with handloads-220 gr Nosler), and another hunter in the party used a plain jane M700 BDL 7mm Magnum Remington with 175 gr factory ammo. It is not the superior rifle, but how well you shoot it. Our PH stressed practice practice practice in all our pre-hunt communications, I tend to believe him.

Buster, the only thing I worry about around my waist is what pants to wear, nothing more cause there's nothing extra.

I'll always take a lighter rifle in a reasonable cartridge.

Brad, I'll bet you're more the exception than the rule....

Buster, maybe, maybe not. A lot of guys I know that are hard-core serious mountain hunters are also great athletes and in tremendous shape... course this town in particular is a bit of a mecca for that sort so is probably unusual compared to the average.

Use a .30-06 Mannlicher-Schoenauer. That's all the rifle you need for African plains game, at least mine worked perfectly for me last year.
