How much less would recoil be in a BAR 300 Winchester compared to a 300 Winchester in a bolt action? I am recoil sensitive in my teeth (not my shoulder)and was wondering how this would be. I shoot a 308 Winchester in a Bar and feel nothing. I am looking for a larger round for moose and know where I can trade the 308 for a 300. Thanks for any help.

To me the recoil is less than a 30-06 out of a Remington 742. Quite a few of my friends have went with the BAR in 300 Win mag after shooting mine. Hope this helps.

I have 2 BARS, one in 30-06 and the other in 338WM, I also have a 300 WM in a 700 rem. the recoils of anyone of them are not that bad, in a hunting situation you'll never feel the recoil anyway. I believe the gas actions soften the intial shock but the travel is about the same. Also consider that BARs are heavy rifles which make a differnce on felt recoil. They are great guns, pleasant to handle and look at and extremely accurate, I have owned a semi auto remington in 30-06 which was in a class of a 12 guage shotgun as far as accuracy was, unbalanced and not particully pleasant to handle or feel except they had a nicer magazine since you did not have to fool around with the trap door on the BAR. The newer BARS have the bolt release which is nice, I never did like the way the older ones are, I fixed that by filing off the round follower in the mag that catches the bolt. I recently saw that for 2004 the BARS are being refigured into standard action and short actions but I haven't seen one yet.

I have one in 300 WM. It's really acceptable. Because of the semi-automatic mechanism, the recoil is quite "diluted". A bolt action (I have one too) gives a sharper (and stronger) sensation of recoil. - Lorenzo
