What should I get?
I have about 900.284 dia 145 grain Speer boatails that I need a rifle to shoot them out of.

I want a bolt or single shot, I have a 7 Rem mag already that I only shoot 162 and 175 grainers.

What case would you use to maximize this weght of bullet?

Short action 7-08. I'll near duplicate the equivalent .308 loading. Long action .280 Remington it'll near duplicate the .30-06 loading. In fact, in both, IF you can equate the same velocity as their "cousin" .30 calibre equivalents you'll get better down range trajectory.

The best if you have the choice would be .280 or if in you can get them outside Europe maybe 7x65R in a single shot to gve you the rim or one of the "JDJ", I think, cartridges? Or if you can get them cheap 7-30 Waters cases but load them to above SAAMI pressure.

I'm a 7mm guy, and there are several different chamberings that would work well with those bullets; a 7x57, a 7-08, and a 284. If you are into belted cases, a 7mm Mag would be perfect.

popcornThe 7x57 is as good as it gets for the lower 48. On a 98 action it don't come any better than that. Just happen to have an extra a 19" replacement barrel I could part with a a reasonable price. Already have two on rifles so the third is not needed. beerroger

7x57...
it'll do just about anythng the .280 will do with less recoil untill you get to the heavier bullets and you can always duplicate .280 rem ballistics in your 7 mag. if you want a little more oomph, but not quite a blast of magnum.pllus, the 7x57 is just a really nice all-arounder and a pleasure to shoot allot.

That is a great deer/antelope bullet out of a 280 but it was really made for the 7-08 IMO. They are a bit soft & run them beyond 2800fps impact vel. & they start to fragment a bit.

I'd go with a 7mm-08, personally. That'd work a treat, and everyone should own one.

Unless you were thinking Ruger #1 or something else equally sexy, then 7x57mm.

I have to say it, you can't shoot 140gr bullets out of 7 mag?

Now on to your original question to scratch the itch.

Bolt action:
American SA-7mm-08
Mauser- 7x57

Single shot- 7x57
Double rifle 7x57R

You already have a 7 mag, so I would skip the 280. Or sell the 7 mag and get a 280. Or just get another 7 mag to shoot the shorter 140gr bullets exclusively.

I think I've confused myself with that post.

I can and have but my 1st year Remmy 7 mag REALLY likes the 162 and heavier bullets.

I think I am looking for a reason to buy another rifle Wink

I would like to try the old 7x57 honestly,
without getting into an expensive custom bolt rifle.

An easy question to answer.
Bolt action 7x57.
Single shot, depending on the type, 7x57 or 7x57R

7x57 would be a great choice, but to be a little different I'd probably go .284 Win!

I have already recommended the .284 Win but if that choice doesn't tickle you then I would opt for the 7x57, very classy and stately.
I'm not a fan of the 7 mags or the 7-08's they just never hooked me.

Just go find a rifle ya like.
we all have are favorite rounds. fact is they all work prety darn well.
For those 145 grain speers. 7mm08, 7X57 mauser (a favorite of mine).284 win , (good luck finding one ! 280, great round never had much luck with it myself.
They are all about the same though, Iknow the .280 has maore case capacity .
If you have a bit of cash you can live without, I saw a sweethart of a BRNO 21 at the cabelas in lacy washington. Its a 7X57. But a Kimber in 7MM08 would be a sweet hart too !
One of the cooler rifles in my collection is a ruger #1A in 7X57.
Just find a rifle ya like in a non magnum 7mm chambering.
youl be fine.

I like the .284Win, if not that the 7x57 a true classic. For a little different, maybe the 7x61 Sharpe & Hart.

Good question!

I also have a Rem 700 7mm mag with the 26 inch barrel. I love the rifle but sometimes I feel like I am carrying a telephone pole through the woods.

After watching my wife dump a nice cow elk w/ her 270...I am thinking of something a little handier than the 700...

I am kicking myself now...a few months back there was a sweet ruger #1 RSI in 7x57 in the classifieds...

Anybody interested in trading a like new 700 CDL 7mm mag for ????

Cheers!
