Remington Model 798
Thought this would be a good place to put this. What do you all think about this new offering?

American soldiers brought it back from both world wars, and America’s oldest gunmaker is proud to bring one of the most trusted bolt actions of all time – the Model 98 Mauser – back into mainstream production. That’s right, you no longer have to rely on military surplus supplies or high-cost custom gunmakers to get your hands on this classic. Long revered for its superior strength, smooth, reliable cartridge feed and inherent accuracy, it’s now available from Remington in a wide range of modern calibers, both short and long action. And we reworked these rifles from butt to bore to meet the aesthetic and performance demands of today’s hunter and shooter.

The long-action Model 798â„¢ (square-bridge Mauser 98) features a richly blued barrel and receiver, and American-made brown laminated stock. To dampen recoil, we added a one-inch rubber butt pad. Barrels are clean, and receivers are drilled and tapped for standard Mauser 98 (long- and short-action) scope mounts.

Expect silky, ultra-positive feeding and ejection, rock-solid durability and exceptionally fast lock time. Influencing the design of virtually every bolt action made today, the Model 98 Mauser never died. It just needed a revival. We’re sure you’ll agree our version was worth the wait.

I had one in my hands last week at the shot show, very nice rifle, well finished, or at least the model on display was.

if the quality control is up to par, i would like to have one. i do have a few questions. what about the barrel threads? same a standard 98 mauser...same as mod 700 remington...or different than both? the other question is about the trigger. standard mod 700 trigger or something different?

i have to admit, after swearing off remingtons a few years ago, i'm a little excited about this new rifle. i hope it turns out to be a good one...bud

I just went to the website.....wow...no WSMs or WSSMs or SAUMs ...just good old rounds.

While I poked a bit of fun at the 700 Remington I've always had respect for them as they were normally very accurate and the strongest bolt in the business. The usual complaint was that they aren't CRF and as far as I'm concerned that complaint holds a particle of merit only for DG calibers. This move on the part of Remington absolutely surprises me.

That said if they can work with Zastava to turn this gun into the Mauser it has the potential to be they've made a good move. The name Charles Daly on it of recent times was an insult to the Mauser brothers.

Now............Will they offer Left Hand versions of Zastava Mausers, as CD did? I hope so.

This will be a great basis for a varmint rig!

Very very good move on Remington's part....

Wonder if it had anything to do, with why Winchester figured it would just close shop up...

I hate to see Winchester Go, as the Model 70 is my favorite rifle....

But this 798 won't seem like a bad replacement at all! just wish the stock forearm resembled the the CDL stock more instead of that cut off BDL stock....

Cheers

I'm skeptical. Just looks like a Mark X action with a Remington name. The Win. mod 70 has that action beat hands down (actually the 700 action has it beat IMO). Also the stock homer . They could at least put a classic stock on a "classic" action.

I like the looks of the CDL better. Here's another thing I don't understand...no offerings in the .280 Rem.?

I really doubt anyone at Remington's publicity department knows a square bridge from a flying bridge. Glad to still have a new made mauser available no matter how circuitous the route.

iron buck,
the web sight does not allude to any left handed guns or any actions. a large stocking remington didtributor already has them cataloged for dealers even though none are in his numerous warehouses last i checked. there are no left handed rifles listed by him either.

I don't mean to be a jerk, BUT I have seen a bunch of complaints about Remington on this very site. I have also heard people complain about the Charles Daly/Zastava actions. Now that they are combined seems like they are going to be great?

I don't want to rain on anybodys "crazy parade" but I wouldn't buy jack from a gun company that has been in business as long as Remington has and calls this a "square bridge action". Why would they demand better quality control on a product that is made on another continent than they do on there own that is made in the back yard? Also who would want that plywood dog turd for a stock?

The Charles Daly imported actions/rifles were not the best and I know people had trouble with the customer service, but they were not overpriced. These are. MRSP $839 for a 375. I don't think that scared Winchester into closing the doors. The classic was only a couple of hundred over that and would require much less work. Atleast you could take it out in the daylight and not be ashamed of the stock.

It is not offered in a "short action" it is only offered in "short action calibers". It has a mag block just like it when you got it from Chuck Daly

I don't voice my opinion much on here but I sure did here. Flame away.

Got to agree on the stock issue. Still would like a barreled action in .257 Roberts and 7x57 though.

Wasn't Remington's main claim to fame their 'Three Rings of Steel' on the 700?

IMO, assuming it IS actually a '98, Remington have finally put out a decent rifle!

I'm with ElCaballero on this. For years the Zastava offerings have received lukewarm interest on most sites. All of a sudden the importer changes and guys get a lump in their pants.

Here's a (sour grapes) news release nfrom Chas Daly:
Zastava Firearms Discontinued
Effective January 1, 2006, we are no longer importing any products from Zastava of Serbia. All of our Mauser and Mini-Mauser bolt action rifles, barreled actions and actions as well as our Superior II rimfire rifles and the ZDA pistols are now discontinued. Zastava has decided to join with Remington Arms for now, so in the very near future you should be able to purchase Mauser (Remington Model 798), Mini-Mauser (Remington Model 799) and Zastava rimfire rifles (Remington Model Five) for approximately 10% more than you were paying for the Charles Daly brand. We don’t think Remington will be selling actions or barreled actions but that remains to be seen. We do know that Remington will not be selling the ZDA pistol.

There are still some inventories of Charles Daly Mausers, Mini-Mausers, actions and barreled actions in the channel of distribution. We suggest you buy them now before you have to pay 10% more for the exact same product, if you can get it at all.

Here's the mini mauser and it appears as though Remington is in such a hurry that they haven't proof read their own words.....saying it has a claw extractor and that it's a '98 Mauser and that it's available in .22-250 and that standard '98 mauser scope mounts work on it. IIRC this is the same hurry up and screw up method that Daly used to introduce these products.

I do have a bit more confidence that Remington will correct this than I did about Daly but time will tell. For now it's fun to sit on the sidelines and watch the fumbling.

I wonder when we will be seing them on the market. If retail is 600.00 I would expect to pay 500.00. Not to bad but they better do a better job of finishing and stocking them than Daily did. The dail was cheap, i would like to see a 9.3X62 and mabye a 7X57 just cause i like mauser ronds in mauser rifles...tj3006

I don't believe Daly ever sold one however even though they listed it on their website.

Besides, it wasn't Wnchester Remington was afraid of, it's CZ. And the CZ 550 beats the Zastava every time.

The price thing is not surprising at all. You know, all this will do is drive up the going rate for surplus 1908, 09, VZ24's since folks who might have considered paying $400 for a CD, now might pay that price for a surplus so they dont have to give big green any of their cash. Why mess with it, you can get a CZUSA 458 for $700 and change.

I've had a couple Mark X actioned rifles and one Mini Mauser. The mini was junk. It wouldn't feed and shot patterns.

No flames, just pointing out that you aren't thinking it through....and my comments are of a philosophical nature...

I'll suggest that you'll probably be happier in the end
getting the laminated stock with it than paying $50 more for
an uninspiring piece of machine inletted walnut you'd be just
as quick to take off and throw away!

"pretty" wood stocks are for rifles that are to be fondled,
stroked and admired. Something freudian there but I'll leave
it alone... Nice to look at but actually USE?
hunting rifles get wet, scratched...

You want my mailing adress so you can ship me that laminated stock when
you take it off?

LAMINATED stocks are for rifles that will actually be USED under
real world conditions.
I will freely admit that I am lukewarm about the kevlar stock under
my Rem700VSSF I'd rather have that than any unstable piece of wood.
Note: ALL "real wood" stocks are unstable if compared
to ANY composit material.

I will admit that I DESPISE the various recycled soda bottle (aka Tupperware")
rifle stocks, but I think that the plastic stocks are the cat's ass on
a Duck/goose/turkey/marine shotgun. not only because they are
impervious to moisture but because they can so easily be filled with
lead shot and epoxy to add weight....

I consider my firearms to be TOOLS, not works of art.
and the main thing I expect from them is that they WORK.

One of those real pretty pieces of walnut? does anyone actually takes
them out into the rain/sleet/snow? if so WHY?

you might not like laminates but for all the people out there
(many on these forums)who might actually buy one of those rifles
many of them will buy them, get them home, then remove and discard
that laminated stock to replace it with the custom piece of wood
they really want!!!

I say again: you want my mailing adress so you can ship me
that laminated stock?

I promise to give it a good home!

I've never handled a Zavazst/CD Mauser and I'll reserve judgement
on the quality under the remington trademark, but I've always
considered the mausers to be overrated, a good military rifle
to be sure, but a good hunting arm?

Someone call me when the stainless steel version is actually
on dealer shelves, until then... yawn!

Assuming it is the same as the Daly the safety didn't lock the bolt. However the bolt and action were machined so that one of the old MKX triggers that would lock it could be used.

Well, since Remington pretty much dominated any catagory they "ran' in in this month's Field and Stream with the 700, 870, 1100 and 1187, I don't think Big Green is too concerned about a few internet rifle cranks like many of us to cause them to lose sleep.
