If only one rifle. . . what?

DWrightIf only one rifle. . . what?
I'm just curious, but thought it might make for a good topic; if for all your hunting you could use just one rifle and caliber, what would it be? I have a few favorites, but if limited to only one, it would be my Sako AV in .338-06. It would take care of everything from Deer and Hogs to Big Bear.

Bwana-beMe I suppose it would be a 300 Winmag, which I don't own. Thank goodness I can have more than one!

namibiahunterFor North America, my .338 WinMag had done all that I'd ask it to do, which was bring down game. However, since I also hunt in Africa I'd have to go with my
.375 H&H, if I had to have only one gun for world-wide hunting (not protection, not target shooting, not plinking, not impressing the boys at the club).

Doctor DI'd be perfectly comfortable with my old '06.

ar corey.300 Win Mag. with 180 gr. TSX or Accubonds for everything.
I would glass bed it and add some mercury recoil traps to tame it down. Also a Limbsaver recoil pad.
I would add a ballistic or mil-dot reticle scope and learn to shoot it from 200-600 yards.

Dr. Lou6.5x55 would cover 95% of my hunting needs, but to make sure I cover 100% I'd go with the 375 H&H- all Sakos, of course.

Jeff SullivanI have a Blaser R-93 with a 9.3x62 barrel that I am confident that I could pretty much hunt the world with it.

Fish30114Well, Jeff Sullivan's post brings a question to mind.....is it 'cheating' your question to answer buy saying: my one rifle would be a Blaser or other rifle with multiple barrels??
If not, I'd go a Sauer 202 with the longer action, which actually allows me to go with anything 308 family on up, I actually have the barrels to do 243, 308, 22-250, 6.5x55, 25-06, 270, 300 WM, 375 H&H, 416 RM. How'd that do?

Larry SellersIf only one for here in the USA and Africa it would be my CZ550FS in 9.3 X 62. A tack driver with enough power in the tight spots. Maybe this is what I should do and sell all the others I have?? Not!! What fun would that be?

Iron BuckIf I were forced to have just one....it would be my custom mauser 35 whelen.

bartsche
.358 X .404 IMP

That's cause that's what I got. Load it up or down as the game dictates.
Now if it weren't to be used on anything larger than moose I'd go with the 7 X 57.
When this question is asked again in about 2010 I may change my mind.

not according to several European countries

i would probably go .30-06
04 October 2008, 20:14
Paul TunkisA few years ago I would have said 30-06 and would probably never looked back. Now, I'll go with my 9.3x62. Not as good as a 270 for western open ground hunting, but I've killed antelope with it at realistic distances. Not ideal for africa, according to some, but everything I shot there died. If I'm after dangerous game, the reality is that there will be heavier weapons in more experienced hands anyway. The rifle, a modified M77 tang safety, is light and handles extremely well, which is a plus.

Bear in FairbanksIf I could have only one rifle it would be my trusty old pre-64, Mod. 70 .270 Win with 150 Partitions. It just plain works. It'll do for just about anything here in Ak. but I wouldn't use it on brownies. I know, some guys will say it's a bit light for moose & grizzlies but a friend has used it on both. This "puppy's" accurate too. Just my thoughts.

LRH270Either a 9,3x74R or .375. Shoot, that's what I use 95% of the time anyway.

If you're talking only one gun period, then either the Simson 9,3/12/12 drilling with the .22 WMR insert or the 9,3/9,3/20 Merkel drilling.....Or the 9,3 Chapuis with the 20 ga barrels....

mstarlingFor North America ... my perfect rifle is a pre-64 M70 in .338 WM. Has a Krieger cut rifled barrel, NECG iron sights, and a McMillan stock. Shoots 2" at 300 yards.
If you include Africa ... either a 9,3 or a .375 H&H. The Chapuis in 9,3x74R with a set of 20 ga barrels is close to ideal. I would like to reserve one larger gun for dangerous game.
Always and interesting mental game that might have some instructional value for those just starting a collection ... but I'm not one to "thin" the already acquired herd of nearly 20 hunting rifles. My kids will do that after me (though I think they'll keep them all).

MikeyBDeer, moose, elk, and black bear, hmm... tough decision... NOT!
.30-06 is a no-brainer!
Make it a light weight gun with a decent powered variable and I would be okay with one gun to hunt.
Which gun is the real question, I'd prefer a tuned, hand made rifle, preferably an accurized M70 action with Timney trigger, floating 24" Krieger barrel and pillar/glass bedded into a McMillan EDGE stock. Add a DNZ mount and 2.5-8x Leupold and anything in my home province out to 300 yards or so has something to worry about.

ConMmmm ... custom built Ruger stainless/synthetic in 358Norma with open sights and a Leupold 2.5-8x on top fitted on Ruger mounts altered to be QD.
I'd see out my days with one those even though I don't need anything above say a 30/06.
Cheers...
