Dealer near me just picked up one to sell on consignment in 30-06 he said it is a Model 50. As per him the bluingand metal in general was in great shape but not the stock. What is something like this worth? He is asking 350

$350 is about the going rate nowadays. Speculators on GunsAmerica and the like sometimes ask much more.

My understanding is that these are pretty top notch Mauser Actions. AM i correct in this assumption?

picked one up at a gun show a couple of yrs back-for 300.00 in Fairbanks, the only FN 98 I have ever bought. After having the rails tweaked some as it was rechambered into the .30-338 win mag it is now sub-moa with 240 grn Woodleighs--glad I had bought it. It is a wonderful action as is.

I think they are about the best used rifle you are likely to get for $350.

I killed my first deer with a JC Higgins 30-06. My bro has it now.

Actually I have not seen the gun yet but it may be the same gun this guy was selling 5 years ago. If it is the same I am leaving it as is..Maybe later down the road I turn it into something special.

If the stock is a little rough that can easily be fixed. The things that bother me the most are extra holes, rough bores. Or offer him $250.

I've never seen one with a rough bore yet, and I have five of them. IIRC, the bores were chrome lined. Four are in 30-06 and number five was a .270 Win. that I rebarreled to 7x57 and restocked in a style similar to late model Winchester M70 Featherweights. Every one of those rifles, except one 30-06 are MOA shooters or better. I feel the stocks are a little on the clubby side, but that's nothing that a little file and sandpaper work won't cure.
I still have the first one I ever bought from Sears way back in 1951, a 30-06. Seems like lately, every time I come across one at a gun show, it comes home with me.
My only suggestion is if one wishes to stay with the factory trigger, replace the pin that holds it to the floorplate with one made of hardend drill rod. The originals have been known to wear through and break.

I haven't either, at least not a rusty bore. I have seen some where the chrome lining was peeling off though, so I suppose those were a little rough. I've owned alot more than 5 and still don't like rough bores.

I have a buddy who has one in 270. He is an attorney and recieved it in lieu of his fees from a fellow who was cash strapped. If I were a righty I would be dieing to buy it. This rifle shoots extemely well, way under moa with a couple of factory loads.

I sold one with a poorly refinished stock recently for $325.00. The metal was about 95%. They are great rifles for $300-$400 and good nucleus for a custom rifle.

A sleeper is the 649 Husqvarna, also. They used large ring FN actions. I love my battered 9,3X62 and my late production 30-06.

The 30-06 will be for sale in the "Classified" tomorrow, along with others.

Stopped by the dealer after work and had a good long look at it. The bluing and metal is pretty pitiful almost all gone and the stock is in need of refinishing. Bore appears to be bright and the action is nice. Xtra hole drilled in the rear bridge for another base comination. Bottom metal looks rough. I believe this would be a part gun . I am going to pass on it. He had another 98 there that was in great shape with a bishop stock..FN supreme but the guy was asking 600. I may counteroffer on that one.

I picked up an higgins50 06 restock for 350 It needed bluing ,had that done. I am thinking of puting a new stock on it. The chrome bore barrel was i belive done by high standard on impored action.
I bough a minty FN for 600 awhile back its a 270 and a great shooter.

I have been paying $275 to $325 for them but lately have not seen any for less than $400, I suppose I will have to adjust, its still cheaper than a pre 64.

Thanks all for the replies. I tell you what once you have seen a few really nice ones pretty much every other action pales in comparison.

One cannot begin to get a milsurp '98 in that order for anywhere near that money.....the JC Higgens rifles are very value priced even at $400 just action alone.

Add barrel and stock and usually scope mounts and this is a real bargain.

You guys are just trying to ake me feel bad. And you are succeeding. I sold a brand new, unfired .30-06 just three years ago for $300.

I still have managed to steal an FN actioned rifle occasionally. That said, I'd pay $300 for any decent one. In the last year, I bought an old FN in .338 WM with a McMillan stock and M70 safety installed for $400 with shipping paid and was going to rebarrel it to .375 Taylor or Ruger, but it shoots so damn good and the stock fits me perfect so I'm taking it to Alaska instead. It says it was built by North Fork Customs, but I have never heard of them, bedding is nice and the action is slick as glass. I'd take 3 or 4 just like it today.

If you run across one with a rough bore, I have a 270 barrel off one that is a beauty. I'd let it go cheap as I just dont need it for anything.

My current pet is a J.C. Higgins M51L. It is on the Husqvarna 1640 action instead of the FN. Shoots great with the original High Standard Barrel and original stock (nicely refinished by Julius Stevens).

you guys are makeing me feel bad about converting mine to 9.3x62 and 458 win with all of this put them back to original talk.
and I will have to agree that they were a competing rifle to the pre 64 win, and still are in that very fine company.

I used to "upgrade" the factory stocks on Higgins and Wards FNs. I would replace the plastic grip cap with steel, ebony forend tip, Old English recoil pad, glass bed if the inletting was substandard (usually was), sand & refinish, checker. Inexpensive and easy to do (except for checkering, which is optional) and makes a fine quality rifle for little money.
