LAWCOPRe: 358Win & Hornady 250's
SOME load info.. I have been loading for the .358 for over 30 years.
FACTORY 200gr Silvertip from BLR- av of 2472fps
200gr Silvertip, CCI #200
46gr 3031- 2435 ave.
200gr Hornady Spire point, CCI # 200 primer
44gr 3031- ave of 2275fps, but lots of velocity spread
50gr H335- 2455fps, E.S. of 12fps
39gr 4198- 2430fps shot very well
250gr speer, CCI 200 primer
44gr H335- 2220fps
45gr H335- 2260fps
42gr 3031- ave of 2200 but E.S. 60fps
220gr Speer, CCI #200
44gr 3031- 2260fps
300gr Barnes (yeah, I know...) CCI # 200
41gr H335- ave of 2010 with E.S. of 12fps
FUN STUFF if you want to shoot varmints
110gr Super Vel pistol bullet, .357 dia. CCI #200
54.5gr 3031- 2699fps
51gr 4198- 3220fps

The load I finally settled on for EVERYTHING I hunt with this cartridge, and I have never recovered a Bullet,
Speer 250gr with 45gr of H335 at 2260. It shoots through everything.
hope this helps

KevinNYYou can buy a Crony for less than the price of the components you will waste without one. Reloading should not be about guessing, put it on your christmas list. The hornady 250 has a reasonable soft nose it should slay elk well for you.

Kag358Well I am still working on that magic bullet combination for my browning BLR in 358Win. I have recently been considering the possibility that I am not generating enough velocity with my 250 grainers to afford reliable expansion. Since I do not own a chrono I would like to ask the informed about expected, achievable velocities from my rifle's 20" barrel. I have been working with Speer 250's Sierra 225's and recently Hornady 250's. I have the intention of using the combination for thick cover hunting of Elk here in Colorado. I tried looking at the mfg. respective sites but could not find a velocity range on any of the above mentioned bullets. So I ask for your help..

Savage99We have a member here by the name of .358 who has shot more bears than some have woodchucks or crows with that bullet and cartridge. If my memory is correct he loads it to about 2400 fps.
Now a bear is not an elk or vice versa but such a bullet at that velocity has to work at reasonable distances.
The Speer manual shows about 2300 fps with their 250 gr bullet. I suppose you need to buy one or two.

cobraI agree with Kevin, given that you are using it in thick cover in Colorado that is one of the more effective combinations I can think of. Don't get too hung up on the velocity thing.

DutchI would say that bullet will expand down to about 1,600 fps. Starting at 2300 fps, that means that bullet will expand out to about 450 yards at 8,000 feet elevation.
It's probably something you should not worry about much, since with a 200 yard zero, that would put your bullet 49 inches low. HTH, Dutch.
