It was basically the all weather version of the Hunter Lightweight Rifle. Standard AV action. Made from 1986-1996
No grip swell or checkering built into the stock.
Blade ejector.
90 degree bolt lift.
Optilock mounts will work fine. They are very tough, and don't mar the scope. I do wish they were lower though.

JCN has just about said it all. I have one in .338 that I just took the scope off of, as I plan on hunting some pretty thick stuff in early season. It is extremely accurate, even with irons, and the "flip up" sight works quite well with a 250gr bullet at 2600fps.
It is only the second Sako I've ever owned, the other being a Forrester in .243 from back in the 1960's. I personally give it the highest praise. Don't know what else to say.

i have seen a few in pacific research rimrock stocks and my hunting partner has 1 with what appears to be a factoey syntecit stock.

Hey Russ,
Your rifle sounds like it will be the cat's ass over in the rain forest! I end up putting most of my Sako's in McMillan stocks sooner or later. Can't think of much else to do to them.

I have tried my best to figure out why the McMillan seems to reduce felt recoil, compared to other synthetics in the heavy calibers, all w/o much success. All I can say is, they seem to work.

JCN, you're right about the rifle in the rain forest! It also works quite well on the North Fork of the Clearwater, around Kelly Forks, just out of Pierce, ID. The general "beating" that beautiful piece of wood would normaly get goes unnoticed on the stock of this one. And IMHO, that's how it should be.
The biggest complaint I ever hear about McMillan is the cost. Perhaps it's justified, perhaps not. But again, "you most likely will get only what you pay for", and the McMillan has worked out fine for me, when comparing it to other synthetics.
