6fluteWill a 7mm Mag feed through a 300. Win Mag BDL action without a hitch?
I'm thinking of buying a Remington 300 Win Mag in a 700 BDL action as a donor rifle for a custom built 7mmMag rifle. I want to be sure that if I changed the barrel out on this 300 Win Mag to a 7mm Remington Magnum, that the 7mm Mag cartridges will feed out of the BDL magazine box and into the barrel without a hitch.
Anybody got a Remington 300 Win mag Remington 700 rifle and some 7mm Rem cartridges, dummies or snap-caps to try this out for me? For goodness sakes, if you try it with live 7mmrem mag caretridges, please keep your finger away from the trigger.

ted thornWith a new 7 Rem Mag cham. barrel in the old .300 Win mags place everything else is the same.
Yes you can do this.

Henry HooverAbsolutely can. Bolt face, magazine, follower everything the same except bore diameter. Good choice too.

MikeyBJust tried it on my Remington 700 in .300 Win Mag, works just fine (dud loads of course - no powder).

6fluteThank you gents. Being able to shop for a .300Win magnum rifle increases my choices and chances of finding a good donor rifle.

Henry HooverYou might be better off money wise to pick up a BDL 30/06. They are much cheaper than 300 mags. You can have the bolt face opened up for less than 50 bucks.
If all you are going to use is the action you might even look at a model 721. Just open the face. These actions are guaranteed shooters. I dont know if this interests you or not. Just something to think about. You can pick up 721s for 300 or less.

You would need to do more than just open up the bolt face. The magazine would also need modification.

Henry HooverI have had to change the follower once. The other half dozen I havent.Ive never had to modify the magazine.

Thomas JonesProbably a silly question,
But, why not just buy a 7mag in the 1st place ?
You can get used BDLs for 350.00 at all the local gun shows.
The last one I bought shot great, I think the guy who sold it to me thought it was worn out. But all it needed was a good cleaning.

Shhh. If I had a ten dollar bill for every Remington 700 I bought second hand because "it wouldn't shoot", only to clean it, glass bed it, float the barrel, and give it an amateur trigger job then proceed to shoot MOA all day long and sell it at a profit I'd probably have enough to buy another second hand Remington 700.
