300 win mag scope help

Afternoon, all.

Planning to send a CZ 550 300 Win Mag to Wayne at AHR after our rifle season is over here for his package 2 tune up. Looking to put some better glass on it when it gets back. Thoughts on Swarovski Z5 vs Z6? I know the obvious of zoom range and 1" vs 30mm tube, but any noticeable difference in clarity? This is going to be an all around rifle (whitetail, elk, plains game, etc). I'm not much into long range shooting. I'm waxing and waning between the Z5 2.4-12x50 and the Z6 2-12x50. I've a Z6i 1-6 on a 375 which I love, I'm just not sure the illumination will be worth the price increase for me given the intended uses of this rifle.

If you're thinking a little step up from a 1" Leupold the 1" Swaro 3.5-10 is an excellent choice. I've had two of them for about 20 years and I they're a bargain in my book.

Thanks, Mark. I've a 3-9x40 Leupold VX-2 on the 300 now. I've a 3-9x36 Swaro Z3 on a CZ 308 that's a nice little scope, as well. I mounted the 3-9x36 on the 300 last night and it looks out of place on such a bulky rifle.

I cannot speak to the ruggedness of the Z6, 1.7-10x42's; but so far I really like this scope with the non-illuminated Plex reticle. Not the original Plex when they first came out, it is definitely too thin for me.

I like the low end field of view and 10x is more than ample for me on a set and forget scope. This maybe my favorite 2nd Focal Plane scope. I hope that reasonable ruggedness/longevity is there.

If you are going to hunt with it. Get the illuminated z6.

I own way too many rifles and scopes. But my only new purchases are going to be a few high end illuminated scopes for hunting.

The z6 is awesome. I am on the fence between a z6 z8 and a blaser scope.

I had a 2 to 12 Z6i on my 300 Win. I replaced the Z6i with a Zeiss Victory HT as the Z6i's very large occular required the scope to be mounted high to clear the bolt. With the high mount I could not get a quick/consisten cheek weld with the Z6i. I now have the Z6i on a single shot rifle where it could be mounted much lower and am quite happy with that combination.

I have a Vortex 1.5x8 on my 300WM and it is super clear, easy/accurate adjustments. Many years back, I also had a Swaro 3-5x10x40. Beautiful scope.

I favor the 1" scope tubes as they are more compact and an objective lens that is 42mm or less. These do not require higher than normal height mounts, which I find make the rifle awkward to carry and shoot. A high mount on a quick detachable mount makes the adjustment from scope to iron sights more difficult.

Whatever you chose, be sure that a zoom from min to max magnification does NOT require the scope to be re-focused.

MOstly depends on what you intend to use the rifle for..I would use a 300 Win mag. to hunt big game like deer, elk, etc. and I would mount a nice small 2x7x28 (used as the 28 is discontinued) if not then 2x3x33...and if I had a straight 4X handy Id just use that..
