Twist for .308?

Hondo64dTwist for .308?
Putting together a .308 for paper, steel, and hunting. Will be shooting mostly 150s, but would like to be able to shoot 180s if the mood strikes me, so currently planning on an 1 in 11 twist. Will I be giving up any accuracy with 150s by picking a twist that will allow me to shoot 180s?

No, John. I once owned one of those pre-64 M70 Featherweights in .308 with a 1/12" twist, and my favorite woods load for deer was the Hornady 220-grain round-nose with 48 grains of Norma
N205 powder. This load shot just a little over 1" five-shot groups at 100 yards, and knocked deer down like someone had jerked a rug from under them! MV was just a little over 2300 FPS, 200+ FPS faster than the same bullet from a .30/40 Krag. And people say you can't use a 220-grain bullet in a .308! WRONG!!

Hondo64dI appreciate the responses, but I think I need to rephrase the question:
My concern is if I get a barrel that will allow me to shoot 180s that maybe the 150s won't shoot as well as they would with a barrel twisted for 150s or 165s. Is this a problem or will my accuracy potential with 150s still be good with a barrel that will stabilize 180s?

308SakoJohn, I shoot alot of .308 and have for many years and have on occasion agonized over the correct twist when doing a re-barreling job. The "ideal" twist is one which will allow the bullet to "turnover" when dropping through the trans-sonic velocity. For a hunting rifle, even a arget rifle, this is a point which should not affect your decision. Other factors will have a greater effect on which bullets your barrel prefers to shoot best. That is where the rub always lies. What I will say is that in my experience the 165 grain weight is the most ideal for all around usage, and your 1 in 11 twist is best suited for that role.

okie john1:12 is the classic because it shoots everything well. For a general purpose 308, it’s never wrong. A riflemaker who pays attention to the basics – bedding, chambering, barreling, etc. – rarely turns out an inaccurate 308. Those things are far more important than rate of twist.

GerardI would go with a 1:10" as well. It extends the range of bullets that can be used to good effect in a 308. Longer bullets for extended range will be sufficiently stabilised and shorter bullets, which require higher resistance to the overturning moment on impact, because they are going faster, will have that.
