Reloading the 338 federal
I would like to know if anyone out there can tell me why any information I can find doesn't tell me how to reload a 185 grain bullet and attain the muzzle velocity that the factory ammo gets with a 200 grain bullet.

From what I found IMR 8208 XBR is the ticket.
180 nosler with 48.5 of 8208 gave 2811 fps and 59500 PSI according to IMR's site.

Federal lists 2630 fps for their factory load with the 200 grain bullet. Hodgdon lists eight loads which exceed 2600 fps with the Barnes 185 TSX bullet, most of them exceed 2630 fps. Nosler lists four loads with their 180-grain bullet which exceed the factory 200 grain load velocity. How hard did you look?

If I had a .338 Federal , the first powder I'd try would be Varget ! I think I'd try W-748 too , it works in the .308 and the .358 , one would think .

Don't forget to have your Liberals spayed or neutered !

I have tired Accurate 2015, Varget, and Ramshot TAC in my son's Ruger All Weather Hawkeye and the only thing that got close to Federal factory ammo was the max loads of TAC with the 180 gr Nosler Accubond, and it was still 100 fps slower. And that is chronographed, not reloading manual numbers or factory specs. I will be trying IMR-8208XBR as that is supposed to be the answer for the .338 Federal. I also need to try some of the Barnes 185 gr Triple Shocks, as well as the 160 gr TST.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.
