Went out yesterday to run my local gun emporiums and pawn shops and ran across a MkV 338 I've never seen before. Didn't know Wby ever chambered a 338! Gonna be a hard sell down here this late in the year ...all our elk hunters are back from the Rockies pretty much. It is a wood stock in the classic Wby Dlx style but without the rosewood tip and cap. The plasticky type finish is cracked in several places like it had gotten too hot, but no scorch marks or bubbling anywhere and the blueing has a smoky haze about half the length of the barrel in front of the receiver in a meduim polish. The gun is at a steal of price at $450 but I'm wondering if ya'll think it might have been in a fire or exposed to some heat source or maybe has some sort of cleaning chemical damage. The receiver is marked "Made in USA", and the recoil pad is original and undamaged. It is being sold by a national chain big box store that has an on site gunsmith so I would suppose they have checked it out...but the $450 price for a MkV is getting my attention.

Still sounds like a decent deal to me. Barring any major defects I'd probably snag it (if it were me).

Actually the cracking on the stock is called crazing I believe this is what Weatherby called it. Now here is what is cool about this I bought a used 7mm WBY deluxe that had this all over it the stock and this gun had it be 10 to 15 years old when I got it. So I called Weatherby and told them about it and they said send it to them so I sent the stock to them and they refinished if for free. Remember I bought this gun used that’s what I call service

Hmmm!! Sounds like best I put in a call to Weatherby once I can get the SR # for a reference and see if they are interested in repairing this crazing. That's exactly what it looks like on some of my wife's pottery stuff...an she's paid big bux for the look on some stuff...it just doesn't look to good on a rifle.
OK , got another question..does anybody know if all Mk V actions are the same length? Seems like I remember that 338's are bunch shorter than say a 300 Wby...if so this gun might be a good candidate for a 338RUM conversion at some point in the future if the barrel shoots good. Hmmm...this could be fun.

All nine lug Weatherby actions are the same length from 240 through 460 same actions.

If it was me I would already own that rifle.

Sounds to me like that rifle needs a good home and a little TLC.

I'm hip deep in prepping the house and yard for a Christmas puppy and will get back to town in a day or two to do the deal.
We are picking up a 8 week old female tri color French Brittany in Oklahoma the end of next week and its been over 10 years since the last piddler ran rampant. I'll let ya'll know what happens.
