Who is using one and for what ?

Have an option on a top build .257. About 20 years old and max 30 rounds through the barrel. Great looking rifle and accurate. But I have a .275, a couple of 7x65Rs, 7x64 and 7x57 and then we move to the .300s.

So I am trying to find a reason why - other than because I can, its Christmas and I have a space or two free in the gun room !

I have two rifles in 257 Weatherby caliber. One is a stainless synthetic Weatherby with a 26" barrel and the other is a Weatherby Vanguard with a 24" barrel. Both are very accurate and I use them primarily for deer hunting and have used them for pronghorn hunting. They are also good for shooting coyotes across fields as flat as they shoot.

Charlie, I'd grab it. The rifle calibers you have are all quite similar using 140 to 175gr bullets at moderate velocity. The 257 Weatherby is in a different class. With light 87 to 117gr bullets at 3,600 to almost 4,000 fps velocities, it shoots flat and hits with authority. One of my favorites.

I’ve had a 257 wby for 20 years. It’s a Sako action, Lilja 26” barrel and McMillan stock. I’ve used it on deer, antelope and coyotes. It is hands down my favorite cartridge for deer size game. And it’s great for coyotes that “think they’re out of range.”

This is very interesting. The gun has been on the auction platform a couple of times and not sold because a/ its a pricy gun being a top build on a 98 system, good wood and Zeiss glass and b/ the caliber .257 - which is not a common European know caliber and people have asked the seller if it can be rebarreled in .30-06 or similar. Europeans don't know Weatherby rounds!

Interesting to read the number of posters that say its a great deer round plus antelope - which I understand! Just somewhat surprised at the deer posters.

put a 115gr. partition in the thing and see what it'll do for you.

I stopped at the 25-06, and every year or two the weatherby keeps calling out to me.
especially since I started hunting more and more out in the sagebrush flats.

I love mine. LH Weatherby Ultralight. Rifle is light and recoil is very light. 100gr @ 3,650fps is a hammer. Haven't had an unlucky deer come out while carrying it, but I have popped a few coyotes with it

Well what other reason do you really need?

I have a 257 built on a mauser 98 action. It shoots 120 gr Hornady HPs very well. Since they are discontinued I have been trying so Barnes TTSX bullets. Havent taken anything bigger than deerbut it kills them like lightning. You have to try it to believe it

The 257 Weatherby has been described for years as: "Hell On Wheels"!

I shoot a .257 Wby in a Weatherby Accumark with a 6 X 24 Burris Signature scope. I consider it the perfect bean field rifle for my neck of the woods with fields that can be a mile long. A 100 grain Nosler T-Tip at 3650 fps and 115 or 120 grain Nosler Partition at 3450 fps the choices are great for Deer sized game. While I hunt Elk with bigger stuff I would not hesitate to use the .257 if I had it in my hands and a shot presented itself. Good Shooting.

Its a killing machine for sure I owned a couple over the years, It is very destructive and ruins a bit of meat for sure. Lots of blood shot tissue but thats why it kills so well...and why I sold both of mine..I never found a shootable hunting bullet probably because at the time I used it, all 25 cal bullets were for the 257 Robts, and 250 Savage and btw the 25-06 had almost the problem.

I remember reading about the cartridge as a kid and always wanted to play with one. Finally got one a few years ago, thinking it would be fun for coyotes. It's definitely my favorite coyote rifle, but I find myself carrying it more than anything else.

It's worked fine on some bucks and pigs for me too. I quickly settled on the 100gr TTSX and haven't noticed that much meat damage with that bullet. I've only found one bullet from it (in a large boar shot lengthwise).

It does seem pretty hard on barrels... but mine has been really easy on brass.

It's crazy how flat it shoots - and I'm stunned at how accurate mine is.

I love mine. My Vanguard has been great on whitetails, wild pigs and javelinas. Plus it’s a joy to shoot. Mine loves 100grn TTSX’s
