Help Needed

Hello Gentlemen,

I know that this is a LONG SHOT, BUT I thought I would take my chances to see if anyone could help me? I am doing a project for my daughter and am looking to see if anyone can point me in the right direction? Maybe refer me to someone at least?

I am looking for a short action in either a Ruger #1, Sako, Dakota or Pre 64 Mod 70. I want to have it chambered for a 243. I know with how things are with the liberals in office- no one wants to turn loose of anything and everyone is hoarding their items. Do any of you happen to have any leads of any kind? Know of anyone who could help me? Any info would be greatly appreciated guys. I promise I am an upstanding guy and am not out to screw anyone? Biebs and Lee Baumgart have dealt with me directly so those two guys can vouch for me. Feel free to shoot me PM if you'd like.

Go to MidwayUSA website, do a search under AVAILABLE rifles chambered in 243 and choose one. It's as simple as that.

I just did that search and found several, with a range in price. Sako for example ought to shoot as accurate as any custom.

You mentioned everything from single shot to long bolt actions. I presume you plan on having one built.

You didn't mention whether you want a "youth" type rifle, but since it's a 243 I presume it's a youth rifle because of the low recoil.

There are several good choices out there right out of the box. No need to go custom.

"Short action"?

I don't know of any length difference in Ruger No. 1's -- they're all pretty short.

A short action in a Sako is made for the .222-size cartridge, not a .243. You'll need a "medium" action Sako like an L57, L579, AII, etc. for a .243.

Winchester never made a "short" action prior to 1964. Some successor company who has since owned the Winchester name has made .308-length actions which mimic the "pre-64" actions in style, so maybe you're looking for one of them.

I know that the .243 chambering is a very scarce one, but if you look hard enough you can probably find a Sako or recent Win 70 in the very rare caliber. Or a Ruger 77, Rem 700, Howa, Tikka, Savage, Mossberg, and maybe a dozen or so other makes.

I had one of the Mod 70 short actions in 308. It wouldn't feed right. Eventually Winchester offered to buy it back from me, and I accepted the offer, and used the money to buy a Ruger 77 MK2 in 308.

the new model 70 is as good as the old pre 70's are and usually weigh about 7-8 lb's less.
just drop the dime on one, use the extra cash to buy her a good scope and move along.

I recommend you study for a few months, and get a new gunsmith. If he told you he can shorten a Ruger #1 Action. He can't.
Since you are a doctor, you can probably afford a custom rifle, which will start at $3k.
Or buy a factory one, for $700.
And 37? I literally know no one that young!
I do think that you have diluted your request so much that you will not get the answers you want. I have seen 5 of them so far.....

You really do not have a problem, go on the internet, AR, Guns INternational find a L-461 older sako in a 243, a Ruger #1 fwt in 243, lots of 6mms for sale today..I built my kids a 6x45 (6mm/223) on a SAko L-61 and with the 75 to 80 gr. Barnes or whatever its deadly on deer and varmnts alike. The world is your oyster..

Anyway, as I tried to point out to you, the scarcity locally is not relevant. MidwayUSA, for example, makes it super easy to just order one of your choice, and ship it to the FFL dealer of your choice. They make that easy too.

Your only problem is yourself.

Respectfully, if I may make a suggestion. Bear with dpcd for now and just excuse an offbeat sense of humour. I've had a little to do with him. I can tell you he is a VERY straight shooter and will take time out of his day to help a fellow shooter if asked. Never would he attempt to misdirect you. Go with it for a while here, follow his posts and get to know him a little. There is much valuable knowledge to pick up on.

What is your budget for said rifle? Will your daughter eventually want to hunt game larger than deer? That's how I would weigh my decisions on what to do rifle and caliber wise.
