Thank you all for your help!
Just want to thank you all for all the wonderful information that you shared. I bought the Magnum Research action, which is made by Sako in a .338 win mag. It will have a 22 inch Shilen (hope I spelled that correctly) barrel placed on it, with a custom laminate stock. I will probably buy a Leopold 4-12 x 40 scope. What is the difference between the Mark VII and the Mark III?

I will show you what it looks like when I get it, sometime in February. It should be awsome!

You should have a real nice rifle when your done. Personaly i would go with a lower power scope. I don't want an adjustable objective on a rifle with much kick, my 338 has a vari X3 3.5X10 and I might switch that out for a 2.5 X 8 A lower power scope will have longer eye relif, and will hold up to recoil better...tj3006

A Leupold Vary-X III 2.5-8x is what I have on my .338WM. I haven't had to crank it up to 8x while moose hunting, not even at 300 yards. Since I hunt around bears the scope is always set to 2.5x, then I bring it to 4x or maybe 6x when getting ready to fire my rifle. However, before buying this scope, one must first look through it set at 8x and when mounted on the rifle to make sure one gets enough eye relief. You don't want a .338WM to hit you on the eye during recoil.

The .338WM is perhaps the most popular cartridge in Alaska, and an outstanding cartridge. I believe Mrs. Barnes (Connie Barnes?) hunts with a .338WM, and uses the lighter weight Barnes bullets with great success. Congratulations on your rifle!
