Whelen improved?
I have a T/C in 35 whelen. It does pretty well..225gr BT @2400 in a 15" bbl. Would there be any significant advantage to having it rechambered to one of the improved versions? Which improved version would be best and how much velocity gain might be expected?

Thanks!
MFH

Longer brass life is probably the largest advantage of improved chamberings. I don't think that an improved 35 Whelen will significantly imrove your velocity in a 15" barrel. However, if you really want more case capacity, either the Brown-whelen improved or the 35 Gibbs would be your best bet on the basic 06 case. Both of these rounds move the shoulder forward as well as improving the case. FWIW - Dan

MFH,

Best is .35 Whelen AI (Ackley Improved) same cartridge but shoulder is re-formed with Ackley angle.

Gain in velocity is significant

35 Whelen 22" 225 gr at 2550 fps with 57 gr IMR-4064
35 Whelen AI 22" 225 gr at 2580 fps with 61 gr IMR-4064

I think the difference of velocity is not thin.

Hope this can help you.

Typo or just 30 fps?

Well, in my own rifles, there was about 70-100 fps differance, depending on bullet weight. That wasn't my point, however. I don't think that you will get a great velocity increase in such a short barrel. - Dan

Dan,
Does the Brown/Whelen allow use of factory rounds? It could be important in the case of lost ammunition. Also, I have been surprised at how little velocity loss occurred. With factory Rem ammunition, I lose 200fps(approx) with the 15" rather than the test barrel of 24".

Thanks
MFH

I like my 35 Whelen AI, and would do the imp again if I built another one.
The Brown whelen will not work with factory ammo the headspce is different due to the shorter neck.( which does increase powder capacity)

Duane is correct, as usual. The Brown-whelen and the Gibbs both move the shoulder forward, not just changinging the angle and removing the taper. This is not really something (because of headspacing issues) that I would like to try by simply firing factory brass in it. For those purposes, stick with the AI Whelen. BER, that's an amazing increase, considering that you don't even gain 10% case capacity by improving. Good luck - Dan

The datas are not from me but from a Wonderful book "Big Bore Rifles and cartridges" by Wolfe Pub. You gain roughly 10% of velocity from 2500 fps to 2800 fps.

I gain same thing with my .450 Ackley mag compare to .458 Win mag.

Personally,

I wouldn't go to the trouble and expense or re-chambering an existing whelen, there will be slight increase in velocity 50-100 fps, but I don't consider that signifigant, considering the cost of the work, and the cost of dies. If you want more case capacity, then have it re-chambered to a 358 Norma, that will yield a signifigant improvement, well, atleast recoil will be enhanced

Can a 15" barrel make worthwhile use of more powder?
