I've never used the post as an aiming reference but it sounds like a good idea considering a 200 yard zero would put the bullet between 7-10 inches low at 300 yards. At 300 yards, on the highest mag (10 for me) how many inches is it from the cross-hair to the top of the post? Also, considering many of the people that read this will be shooting with different magnifications, at 300 yards, does this hold true for any variable ie. 3.5-10/4.5-14/6.5-20? I would think it would vary considerably. No big deal as long as this method is tested at the range first but some may read this and take it as a fact for their scope/load/gun.

It works for any VariX III that has the "range" numbers on the power ring (anything below 20X on the top end). The reason is that now matter power you get, it has to subtend 16 inches at 600 yards, which is 8 inches at 300, where a lot of bullets hit when zeroed at 200 yards.

For any other brand, you need to know reticle subtension. Post what you have and I will look it up for you.

Well JCN, the .300 RUM will be around forever. That is one fine cartridge. I took one of mine shooting this morning to test a Horus Vision scope. It placed all my shots out to 700 in pie plate, and from a sitting/bipod/sling position. At 857 yards (thank you Leica Geovid) I fired two shots that were within 4 inches of each other and about 4 inches high. Wind was almost negligble.

I am not advocating shooting at game that far (nor would I ever do so), but that particular RUM is awesome. Very accurate.

I will bring my .338 Win for most hunting, but the .300 RUM is a winner. BTW, I wouldn't put too many marbles on .376...
